Hey guys, I have a 1964 Yamaha yds3 250. out of nowhere my brake light stopped working. running light works but when I step on the brake pedal, nothing. I tested the brake light switch-good the tail light assembly was replaced-brand new replaced tail light bulb-good checked the ground- seemed ok I don't know what it is. please help Andrew
Hey Andrew, welcome to the forum. Everything I could think of, you've covered. One last point, recently we had a bike here that had no brake light or so we thought. Like you we checked everything, we did find that a simple adjustment of the brake switch itself was the culprit. Once adjusted, all good.
I would be examining every inch of the brake light wiring for cracks , rubbing , breaks etc ....especially if some of it is original ..... and also all the connectors . Do u have a multimeter to test continuity? If the connectors need a clean try something like this ....
welcome along mate, silly quetion but did you check the bulb? if you have exhausted all other areas i would be doing a wire trace and checking your earths.
Was the bulb you fitted a dual filament globe ? it would need to be a dual filament bulb so the elsser wattage filament illuminates when the headlight is on and the brighter filament lights up when the brake pedal is pressed.
Yep I'd agree with others and say when activated you're shorting somewhere (not earthing out properly). What is most likely happening is that you've got a bad earth on one of the circuits. When your bike is on (tail light only) the brake light is probably finding earth through the tail light circuit. When you activate the tail light, both circuits are active and neither is earthed so they both short off. Check how each circuit is earthed, if you have a test light or a multimeter you should be able to trouble shoot it pretty easily. Connect a wire to the positive battery terminal and run it to the test light/multimeter. Then test all the points in the tail light assembly, where you find the ground is not working there is your problem.

Just test at bulb if u have power with a multi if not then break in wire somewhere could be a lose bullet connection mate
