Good day to all of you. I am currently wondering if these two Yamaha parts are interchangable: 3LN-11610-20 (fzx250zeal, fzr250r) & 50M-11610-20 (xv250virago). They are 0.5mm O/S piston rings. As you can see they only differ in the first 3 characters which designate the model that the part was FIRST used on. I got no answer from further studying Yamaha part number theory. Please post what you think!

The first three numbers represent the model so they are different parts. If they were the same they would use the same number. For example the sidestand 2KT-27311-00 is used across multiple models. The 2KT would have been the first Yamaha model to use this part. They do not change the part number if the same part is used on a different bike.

Having said that, parts are sometimes superceded by a new number. CMSNL is a good site for checking if this has occurred, so using the sidestand that I previously mentioned we can see that it has been superceded by 4BP-27311-00

There are some good pages on the web outlining Yamaha part numbers.
For bolts and screws the size is part of the number eg
    95811-10020
This is an M10 bolt with a length of 20mm
