Hey guys, so recently i have stopped riding my wonderful zxr 250 as the cam chain tried to bust through the cam cover! as you will be able to see from the photos below it has dug its way through until a puncture which has led it to loose a great deal of oil. After managing to get it home i have stopped riding it. I did notice the ticking a while back but did not think of it being related to the cam chain as it only appeared around 7k revs, like a vibration noise. So my question is, do i definitely need a new cam chain, i have taken apart the cam chain adjuster as also shown in the pictures, i seem to be missing a few parts then what the manual describes, if anyone could confirm this that would be great. When i took off the cam cover, the cam chain slack wasnt as bad as in the picture, that is because i took out the adjuster, however after putting it back in it didnt go back to how it was before? is this because it needs kicking over to realign or something? i will note i havent kicked it over at all since taking off the cam cover and removing the cam chain adjuster, just wanted a confirmed opinion that ill need to get a new cam chain and perform the tedious task of replacing it?
No pics there mate, been there before with it chewing through a rocker cover & as I found out recently a new cam chain involves the motor coming out and splitting cases unless you did what I did
Cam chain tensioners need to be set properly, you will need a new cam chain, new or good 2nd hand tensioner & a rocker cover.
woop sorry guys, find the images below. And yeh if i go through with replacing the cam chain i was gunna look at doing the grinder mod on the casing.
Tensioner is all there, to set it loosen the little screw half way push it all together how it should go and tighten the screw down tight, it should stay there now, tighten it back onto the motor and loosen the screw again until you hear a crack then retighten again. Ya looking at 90$ for a new cam chain,--60$ for a rocker cover 40/50$ for a tensioner from a wreckers, ive heard gpx 250 tensioners are the same(???) if ya want a new one
Alrighty, thanks for the help, guess ill just have to put in the work and give this cam chain a shot. Already dropped the engine out once when i powder coated the frame and id rather not make it a twice deal, so hopefully it all goes well. Also for the tensioner, have heard of a few that have put in an adjustable one off a KLX, anyone done this before? would be nice to have that adjustable option
Yeah thats what I thought too! The cam chain comes joined thats the problem, theres not enough clearance to get the old chain off the timing sprocket so just feeding the new one on sounds great until you actually have to do it. I wouldnt even try unlinking a new cam chain but I did have a look
I've split a new endless chain on an FZR and ran it for several thousand KM with no issues. Did it on the R6, too. The latest one on the zeal was not endless so joining pin had to be careful peened. It survived the 900KM odd trip to Texas and I definitely held the throttle pinned a few times... The key is having the proper tools. Get a decent chain breaking and riveting kit and learn how to use it.
the one i bought was broken already, i'll see if i can find the invoice for it but im sure there are afew that come broken.
