I couldn’t find this thread elsewhere. ‘The Strange Death of the British Motorcycle Industry’ - Steve Koerner Nearly finished this one. For those of my generation, starting riding in the 60s, a very interesting read. Lots of stats, photos and history. It covers the rise, decline and ultimate demise of British bikes during the 20th Century. Far more complex than I imagined, the rise of the Japanese industry was just the nail in the coffin. Politics, the wars, trade restrictions, rising living standards, industrial disputes, poor image of motorcyclists, road safety, complacency and more were all factors. Who knew that Australia was once the biggest export market for British bikes? That BSA was bigger than Triumph? This is an interesting but not a gripping read. I have read it slowly over a number of weeks, interspersed with bike mags and other books. Well worth a look for those with an interest in the history of the industry which once revolved around British bikes. Incredibly researched- the endnotes / bibliography alone is more than 70 pages long.
