Hiya

I just bought a 1989 FZR250 for a project bike. Project = doesn't actually start.

Calling on all FZR enthusiasts for help; here are the symptoms and situation:

Because bike has been sitting for a few months I put in new: battery, oil, spark plugs, air filter.

Now here's what I do:
1. Turn on ignition.
2. Check all lights, indicators, horn, flasher. All electrics seem to work, neutral light, high beam light etc.
3. With side stand up, clutch pulled in, bike in neutral, killswitch set to run, I press down the starter switch.
NOTHING HAPPENS.
Bike doesn't move, but the oil light comes on when i press the starter switch. The bike has fresh oil in it. what the. cross wires maybe?

Now there was a wire coming out of the right handlebar controls that had been looped to the 'run' wire of the kill switch in a bodgy way when grounded spinds the starter motor at the expense of all the other electrics. But this strange addition helps me not at all when the bike doesn't start! HELP!

ps roll started once, was very hard and it only ran for a few seconds. I think maybe stale fuel in carby? Carby drain screws are burred from previous owner so don't know what to do there.

Again, any help would be great, because it's got ten days til it is booked into a mechanic and I really would rather do it myself!

Cheers,
Alex

What happens if you get some jumper leads and hook them directly to the starter motor? (negative/black to the chassis, red/positive to the terminal on the starter). This will give you an idea of the condition of the starter motor.

Also, what do you see where your engine number should be? I'm trying to figure out where mine should be.

I can't find the engine number on the block...only gears on the box and the oil type on the other side.

When I short the starter motor it just spins really loudly and all other electric lights almost go out...

Not sure what that means.

Does the engine turn over when the starter spins loudly.

Update!

Haven't replied for a few days because I've been trying everything!

So this is where I'm at:

The bike has a now fully charged battery, and roll starts easily and now idles happily. .But! I still cannot use the 'start switch' to start it; pressing the start switch (stand up, neutral, clutch in, killswitch off) only makes the red light on the dash light up when i press it. Has fresh oil change and is full though.

What I have been able to do: with the battery attached to the bike, I use car jumper leads to power the starter motor and the with ignition on easily starts and runs.

Just can't get the start switch to activate the starter!

sounds like one of those items (the start switch, stand up, neutral, clutch, killswitch) is faulty or the coil in the main starter relay is open circuit.

Try this post that I just put up, it might help.
I can't train you to be an electrician over the net though..

Unplug each switch; connect a continuity tester / ohmmeter. Open / close switch; if the meter / tester doesn't show a change in state, it's pooched. It may be cleanable / rebuildable, or you might want to get one from a wreckers (test that one at the counter!).

Unplug the starter relay, and use jumpers to put juice directly to the starter relay coil. If it clicks, it's good. Otherwise, it's a paperweight.

I posted this up in the electric diagram post in the how to section. It might help you work out whats going on

3LN starting circuit as best I can figure out, can't guarantee 100% as I can't read Japanese.

Thanks heaps guys, I'm going to pick up a tester on my way home today to check the switches. That diagram will be helpful! Also going to check out local wreckers soon thereafter.

I'll keep you guys posted, thanks again for the help!

Cheers,
Alex

Alright so I found the problem after testing every connection switch and fuse...the starter motor was connected to the negative terminal! Don't even ask me how this happened, the previous owner must have tried to change something and ended up with this.

But it runs! And leaks oil out of the head...and doesn't rev past 12,000....I'll try and fix these new issues using the 'search' button

MOral of StOrY: Oil light when starter pressed = starter motor hooked up to negative post on battery instead of starter relay.

Thanks everyone for you help! Ps I named my bike dave ;) It lives alongside bam bam the rs250 and sixxy the R6

cheers
