Been a flurry of posts on FB about new law changes requiring motorcycles that are to be imported into Australia now have to be asbestos free. This could effect brakes, clutches, wiring harnesses (60's bikes), gaskets. Fines are insane if you say its compliant and it is found to have asbestos
So are they requiring all imports or just vehicles to be asbestos free. If it's just vehicles it seems easy enough (but a pain in the ass) to send the clutch, brakes, etc in a separate package... But seriously- what the fu..? Y'all government silly (not that I have ANY room to talk lol)
One of my hobbies is live steam engines, the older ones have asbestos..basically its a removed before shipping or no sale...easy on a model steam engine Can be done on a motor cycle(just more labor intensive) remove clutch plates brake pads and wiring harness...Have the seller aware if they want the sale they are responsible for any loss if they ship a non compliant item...
brake pads are easy to pull off as are clutch pads, but what if you had to remove a head gasket, I appreciate the risks of asbestosis but is this not bureaucracy gone mad ?
Na just typical the small amount of stuff coming into the country dosnt warrant the risk to handling staff,so its easier and cheaper to blanket ban. Same thing happened with lipo battery's a few years ago after a number of postal office fires...they just ban them from shipping all together, after a while some courier company offered to carry them via their hazardous shipping system's and aus post now will ship them via road trans..
one of my clients had a container of mini bikes about 5 year ago need to have all the brake pads removed on arrival into Brisbane because of this. this is not new. some of the buildings on the lng plant in gladstone got delayed being cleared customs due to asbestos being found in the building that was imported from overseas, they had to have a customs exam on everything that came in after that date, that was a couple years back.
Do you have any detail as to how, or if, this will apply to temporary imports ? I'm thinking specifically of racebikes taken to Oz for meetings as I have customers in this position....
i will check with the customs brokers at work on monday and let you know. i am guessing the bikes are coming in on carnets?
Our governments, both flavours, have always managed to over-react to things like this and make ridiculous legislated requirements
Just a further note on how serious they're now taking this, Polaris recently recalled it's entire range of junior quad bikes due to asbestos in brake pads, brake shoes, gaskets, and washers. The recall affects Scrambler 50, Scrambler 90, Predator 50, Predator 90, Outlaw 50, Outlaw 90, Outlaw 110, Sportsman 90, Sportsman 110, Ace 150, Sawtooth 200 and Phoenix 200 models supplied between 2003 and 2017. Recall is here
