So I noticed last night the axle that came with the back wheel is a different thickness and length to the original axle on my bike... Did GSX250s have various anxle sizes throughout the early 80s? Photo below.. Anyway, the new axle won’t fit the frame on my bike without a bit of modification. I was thinking the solution is to use the wheel hubs from my original wheel (spoked), fit them on the new wheel (mag) fit new bearing to match and use the original axle. The hubs appear to be interchangeable and fit either wheel, I am just not sure from a safety / load point of view this would work given I’d be using a smaller axle.
The GSX250E's all had the same front and rear wheel spindles throught the years they were never changed as far as I'm aware but yours being the 'EZ I'm not sure of the correct width or length. If you can hang five till tomorrow I can measure my rear wheel spindle width/length and let you know what it comes in at. I can't see how your wheel hubs could be interchangeable especially if you have mag wheels as they are complete/part of the wheel itself. All you could feesably change would be the brake plate hub the sprocket carrier hub with its bearing and the wheel bearings themselves although if youre going one size bigger on the inner maybe that might suggest the bearings you would need would be bigger on the outer race and would therefore not fit your wheel. I would just find a wheel spindle that fits properly and save the messing about ... is there not a wreckers yard near you that you could go hunting in?
That would be appreciated! Yeah I meant take the brake plate hub and sprocket hub from the spoked wheel and fit to the new wheel, finding bearings to fit the wider diameter hub yet smaller axle and then sliding in the original axle seeing as it fits the frame of the bike. The new axle that came with the back wheel perfectly fits this back wheel but is too big for the bike frame (about 1mm too thick and about an inch too long). It’s odd, maybe these wheels aren’t for the 250s after all and were used on another model...
Could be GS450 wheels Marcus or GS425, I'm pretty sure I've got a spare rear wheel spindle and maybe even the nut I'll measure mine from my bike tomorrow and give you the measurments and 'if, its the type you need if you can't get one over there and can wait I'll package it up and send it you over always glad to help out if I can.
Thanks Cuda! Yeah I’ll see if I can get the right axle here first and save you the hassle. I was so close...
Sorry I made an error two posts up I was thinking your bike was the GSX250EZ that's actually someone elses bike I'm thinking off on here isn't it yours looks to be the GSX250E like mine yes?
Well it's 01.43 in the morning here so I think its time to hit the sack see yawl tomorrow fellas nighty night
Hi Marcus, right just measured her from the outside of the spindle head to the end of the spindle it measures 256mm's and measured with calipers the width of the spindle itself comes in at 16mm's, hope that helps
Just thought I'd add a couple of pictures Marcus so you can see for yourself the overall spindle length from head to end is 256mm's the head is 10mm's wide so that leaves 246mm's on the actual spindle itself and 16mm's in width.
Okay so my spindle is: Original (for the spoked wheel): 15mm diameter 256mm length incl head New spindle (on the back mag wheel): 17mm diameter 287mm length incl head... I don’t think swapping the brake plate and sprocket hub between the wheels is a solution anymore, as this creates the need for awkward bearing sizes in the mag. E.g on one side of the wheel I’d need a 47mm diameter bearing with a 15mm inner diameter bore.. I don’t think this is standard or easy to find. In addition the spacers which come with the mags are also of different lengths to the spacers on the smaller spindle.. I’d need to cut them down to centre the wheel properly even if I got it on the frame.. I am thinking there’s a few too many variables to change in order to get the wheel on.. so I might just need to clean up the old wheel and throw it back on. Here’s some photos of the numbers on the back wheel. They were advertised as GSX250 mags but it mustn’t be the case.. maybe it was for the 450s as you suggest. Here’s some photos of serial numbers on the wheel if anyone can recognise them:
47x15 bearing seems to be an available size from a quick google. I would suggest finding the right bearings and using your original axel and spacers.
