Typical government greediness... from July 1 all overseas imports of less than $1000 attract GST.

I got an email from Buyee announcing that they will be collecting it. That marks the end of my usage of their service since it is very expensive to get things shipped as it is.

It will be the same no matter where you go, it is just more of the Grab, Snatch & Take and it won’t make local pricing any cheaper.
This will hopefully be my last Auction purchase from Japan this week.

Meh Its happened with some European countries.. The biggest issue is some overseas company's wont ship to Australia because they cant be bothered with the extra BS..Then its just a matter of using a mail forwarding company. Yeah it will cost more but plenty of places that will flip the aus gov the bird so to be competitive in the dying global economy :D

Ebay already sent an email communicating the same. They will add 10% to all purchases from overseas being delivered to Australia.

At least our GST is only 10% unlike Blighty where VAT is now 20%.
We pay it on most stuff we buy now anyway.
It was great not having to pay for imported items under $1000 before.
The main issue now is Companies refusing to sell or ship to Australia because the onus is on them to collect the GST and pay it to the Australian Govt periodically.
That ends up putting more cost onto the item.

I have already had it applied to a purchase of $48 for a part ordered from Germany paid through PP.

Germans are famous for being extremely over zealous with 'rules'. I sent a micrometer to Germany with invoices and paperwork showing the genuine price, Mitutoyo instruments are a lot cheaper here than most places, and the German customs decided that it was too cheap so they made up their own price and hit the recipient for all the charges.
