Howdy all Been getting stuff ready for my project srx and was thinking about a new end can. Mine is a crusty rusty mess. Got me thinking I'll just hit up eBay and get a cheapie no worries. Do simple exhausts not exist on ebay?! They have shorty pipes, huge tips, weird tips, oval shape, weird profile, short megaphone, long megaphone, scooter/small cc, Gp exhausts, straight pipes etc What are people doing for older OEM normal looking exhausts?
Yeah there's so many slip on muffler's out there, all shapes and size's There's a guy on ebay from SA that has a couple of muffler's that may suit ? Been down the road your heading already i'm afraid. The alloy muffler that was fitted to the bike when purchased wasn't worth using , simply to much damage to it. The only muffler that i could find at the time was a Musarri polished muffler. It was the correct O.D to fit where underneath the rear foot peg hanger's per factory. I even ordered the muffler without the name plate riveted on , so it wasn't branded as such. It's listed in the for sale section , i'f you'd like to have a look. Ignore the listed price , PM if your interested. I was lucky enough to be gifted a O.E system as i was trying to keep the bike pretty well factory look when possible.

The XT 660R muffler look's pretty good. The only thing to be aware of is the air gap between the rear foot peg hanger and the top of the muffler. The air gap is approximately 3mm , so there's not much room there. When you bolt up the header pipes and the collector box , you'll see what i mean. What was fitted to the bike when purchased.
I have sussed these ones and just wasn't sure if they would suit, they were the closest thing I could find to OEM normal looking though. I have seen those ones too but the tip in them just looks weird to me! After that nozzle/narrow tip style or short tip style. If I can't find something ready made I may go that route, I have considered getting a custom exhaust made to eliminate the big chunky box muffler thing. But then you'd have to tune etc and I ain't got time for dat!! Haha
Yes the tip's on the Musarri muffler's are angled , but they re riveted on , so maybe be able to be modified , or just paint it black as per original Yamaha muffler is. Thought also about removing the collector box for a better note and lose some serious dead weight. But as you've mentioned than you'd have to get it re-jetted i assume. I just kept mine pretty well looking factory , i'm happy with the note of it.
Out of curiosity , just had a look at the Musarri muffler and the large outer angle piece can be riveted off and the inner metal sleeving part's could be cut straight. Never had a good look before , as when i received the O.E muffler i just put put this muffler aside.
Yeah thought I could drill out the rivets and do something with the tip but I have a case of the cbf's and would rather an off the shelf fix. Didn't think it'd be so hard to find a standard looking exhaust haha
The trouble i encountered was finding a muffler that had the correct O.D and had a similar style / look as the factory muffler. I did find a really nice S/H alloy muffler , i think it was off a Husky or a KTM 4 stroke .It was cheap so was worth a try , but the seller wouldn't send it for some reason. So in the end i purchased the Musarri muffler. The outer tapered section on the Musarri muffler is riveted on , and the rest of it is steel as pic's show. A steady hand with a large cut off wheel or a cold saw would be better , could do a straight cut to remove the tapered section and cut it back to the removable baffle.
