Hey all, First post here on the 250cc Motorcycle forum. I am rebuilding a Suzuki GSX250 1981 bike at the moment. I have identified one bad ignition coil, and one good coil. Does anyone know any good substitute coils for this bike? Do I need to get the specs from the manual and purchase accordingly, or am I stuck with searching ebay for used original coils? Would prefer to replace both coils, and prefer them to be new if possible. Cheers!
My bike has currently this kind of coil on one side (the pic is from Google): It's some Honda coil I think. The bike seemed to run fine with it and I even bought another one like that, to have both coils identical, but then I burned the stator (and maybe regulator too, I don't know yet...) and I don't know what caused it. I suspect the old battery and it's corroded connections more but I don't know...
The standard cheap ass reg-rec generate a lot of heat that leads to stator, wire and reg-rec failure. Here is a great read http://www.triumphrat.net/speed-tri...-diagnostics-rectifier-regulator-upgrade.html and another http://www.jetav8r.com/Vision/IgnitionFAQ.html Shindengen also have a 'Series' version. I bought mine here http://www.roadstercycle.com/
Now that is a very interesting information there. Could you tell me please, what kind of kit you went with exactly (the SH775?) and was there anything you needed aside from the kit itself? And that really is a straight replacement for the usual regulator? Until now, I had an Electrix (picture from www.wemoto.com): I ain't completely sure though that the regulator is bad. The stator was, sure, burned, changed that already, but couldnt't get the bike to run due to some serious minus degrees outside and thus couldn't do yet any testing.
Yes, I bought the SH775. There is some discussion about rpm limitation on some threads which I think is incorrect. The limit would be AC voltage from the stator not rpm. There is a lot more discussion about the issue on this thread http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,20426.0.html I added a simple web page that relates to my R4 build here http://litetek.co/R4/ShindengenRegRec.html My plan is to fabricate a suitable mount that will draw the maximum amount of heat away from the unit since I live in a hot climate.
Thank you for your answer, @maelstrom, now I've got a lot of good food for thought from these links you posted!
hi Dan, I know hopefully you see this. I have an 81’ gsx250 also, I was wandering if you had found good aftermarket coils? As I find myself in the same situation. cheers Kieran,
I am running these Honda Tec Mp06 coils. If you search for them you can see that they are still made and sold new. They fit nicely, but you have to have those long nuts attached to them as can be seen on my pics. You can also change wires on these coils, which I have done. I put brand new wires and NGK plug caps on them.
Hi again, I haven’t got around to pulling the trigger on these mpo6 coils. I’m just checking that they have the right resistance( 23k ohms secondary) thought it worth asking, cheers
