im looking at getting a 1989 model im not sure if it runs ill take fuel and battery with me I know carbs can be a problem are there any other non starting obvious problems than I can look at Ive been working on bikes for 50 years but these bikes are unknown to me any help would be great
Its a 2KR .... has the steel frame .... last year of that model was 1988 Looks in good shape and complete even though photos can be deceiving Also looks to have been "restored" And yes carbys are the biggest hurdle but thats a given with FZRs If it wont or doesnt run just offer him half the price
Looks to be tidy enough - 2KR carbs are less problematic than 3LN1/3/5 carbs which wear the emulsion tubes badly - I cannot say for certain that 2KR carbs are not problematic, just that 3LN are a PITA Check the oil and coolant and see if it goes VROOM When NOT in gear and with the clutch out [engaged] the transmissions rattle [bag of spanners] it doesn't mean that it's going to self destruct - pulling in the clutch and clicking it into gear should quieten the noise somewhat
ive contacted him he says he will start it when i get there so thats a start is mileage a problem i he told me its been repainted new tyres and battery i havent asked why he is selling it it comes with another bike mostly in bits the engine was running he says roll on tomorrow
I picked up the bike today it's not a pretty as the photos But it starts and runs and revs !! It came with another bike in bits with a good running engine he said I'm going to need a few body bits but I'll go through it first
I fired the bike up today and apart from fuel leak it seems to run ok Fuel is coming from a vent?? between the two right hand carbs i,ve taken the airbox off when I rev it the slides go up so things there seem ok without asking the obvious question how do i stop the flooding The bike came with another engine and carbs so if needs be ill inspect them
I would guess the float is stuck (not shutting off the fuel when the bowl is full) , float needle rubber is rock hard (not sealing off the fuel flow) or the float assembly o ring is stuffed and leaking Im guessing also the vent its coming from is the float bowl vent Also if the bowls arnt being shut off when "full" then there may be fuel in a cylinder and possibly in the engine oil The initiation ritual of owning an FZR250 is pulling the carbys off and on 50 times Looks like your first is coming up
My RG400 was easy to do the carbs that will teach me to sell things The spare carbs have at least 1 float bowl screw butchered beyond hope Iwanted a project looks like I got one
As u mentioned in your opening post that u have been doing this for 50yrs (as I have) , do u use JIS drivers on the Jap bikes? I only learnt of them in about 2013 They make life so much easier on carbs especially .... and its the main reason the screw heads are hacked on these older bikes is from using Philips https://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/dimples-using-the-right-screwdriver.1068/
Yes I've got some correct ones I just went to drain the float bowls and all the drain screws are facing inwards so they are on the wrong way !! There's a swap meeting on at Goulburn next weekend I might know by then if there's something I'm stuck for
I just took the float bowls off and there's a bit missing it's a screw and fork that holds the float needle seat onto the body Looks like the seller was not as truthful as he seemed Good job a spare set of carbs are with it
Oops it's a screw and washer holding the seat in I'll perhaps refit the carbs tomorrow & hopefully all works I can then decide whether to restore it
Do yourself a favour and get a full kit for the carbie from Litetek ( message @maelstrom ) and read up on FZR carbies.... best to get yourself all new float valves as they may look ok but there is every chance they will leak causing flooding etc. You will learn all about FZRS and pay homage to the blood gods when you work on these things

Oh hello there. Thanks for the plug guys. PayPal are closing down our Singapore based account and won't open one in Thailand unless we become a company limited. This is a country wide change it is not just us. A big pain in the arse. If you need something then order it quick
Start at the top - rust in tank. Check compression >100lbs. Valve stem seals harden easily with disuse, but I've recovered an eng with oil additive. Then get onto carbs - kits etc. Post hijack - does anyone have an email for Yamaha Japan? I need a build date (for club/classic rego)
Good news, there is no change. PayPal are going to do nothing, but they might do something when they transfer our account from Singapore to the new, and thus far dysfunctional, Thai branch, so in the meantime everything just continues as normal.
