always have a fuel filter

    gdays guys,
    well im all nwe to this motorcycle thing. last week i bought an FZR250, 1994 3ln-3 with 26000 kms. i live in sydney and the bike was in cooma which is 400km south. so i got a mate who lives in canberra to drive me there. i got the bike and rode it to canberra with no probs. i then left his house and went on my way back to syd. i stopped in at goulburn to get a drink and then was back on the road. i got to suttons forest and needed to go to the toilet so i stopped at the servo. when it was time to go again my bike did not start. when i got the bike the guy said he has not ridden it in 6mths so it had a flat battery so i immediatly thought the battery was flat again so i tried to clutch start it. the rear wheel just locked up. i then asked a truckie for a push and 3 big burly truckies gave me a push still the rear wheel locked up. one truckie had a battery pack so we tried to jump start it but it would not turn over. so on the phone to NRMA. they turned up 1hr later. during the wait i noticed a fuel leak and the fuel was a black colour. i was going to worry about this later i just wanted to get the bike going.(its about 11pm now and ******* cold) he could not start it either so i got it towed to a workshop. the next day me and a mate put it on the back of his ute and we took it home. i did some trouble shooting. first i took the plugs out and tried to crnk with no compression but it still did not crank. so i pulled off the starter and found it to be burnt out. i then pulled the cover at the starter motor to crank the bike by hand to see if it was seized. the engine turned. i was so relieved to find out it was not seized. when it was turning over i noticed a lot of fuel coming out of the spark plug holes. this i thought was strange. i dropped the oil and found 4 litres of oil and fuel mixed. i looked for a fuel filter and could not find one. then the penny dropped. i knew what went wrong. he had not used the bike for so long and he had no filter on it. all the crap in the tank was going into the carbies. this crap holding the needle off its seat allowing fuel to drain into the bore. after a while it leaked in to the sump. with that much oil and fuel in there when i tried to start it, it got hydraulic lock and would not turn and thus buring out my starter motor. so i put a new starter in and broom broom she went. idled rough and had a lot of steem coming out. i let it warm up and expected the steam to go but it didnt. i thought some more. when i was tring to crank it fuel in the chamber it got the hydraulic lock and trying to compress liquid does not happen so it gave way at the weakest point which is the head gasket so now i have a blown head gasket too. all this cos he didnt have a fuel filter on it. i have found a good dealer for parts in bikebiz in parramatta. the head gasket cost 29 dollars which i thought was cheap. so im doing the job myself and while the head is off im getting it reconditioned. 6 bucks each for valve stem oil seals and the machinist said for a surface skim valve re seating and putting in the new seals about 300. ive got it all pulled apart now and will be getting my digi cam back off a mate tomorrow so ill take some pics and post them here with a discription on how to do the job so if any of u guys want to do it u can learn from my experiences.
    so my first impression of motorcycles is **** but i hope it gets better as im sure it will.
    wow that was a lot to type feels like i have rewriten war and peace.

    Damn that was a hectic story dude, glad to hear everything is working itself out.. did you call back the owner to abuse him?? Welcome to the site I hope you find it informative.. and glad to see another fzr 250 rider.. hopefully a safe law abidding one <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_roll.gif" alt=":roll:" title="Rolling LoL" /><!-- s:roll: -->
    Wherre abouts u live? Not many sydney riders so we definately head up for a ride once ur bike is in shape.. mind is still at the paintshop.. guy is takin his damn time.. and im gettin sadder everyday.. <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->

    At least when people (particularly Mr. Plod) are looking...

    Anyways - crap start to your first bike but once you get it up and running you will find the fzr a great little bike - one of the best 250 cafe racers you could find! Good to know that you were able to troubleshoot yourself - saves a lot of money and likely time as well.

    Hope things improve (which I am sure they will) and if you ever need advice regarding fzr stuff let us know. Sounds like you have the technical / mechanical side down pat, but questions could also come from other fronts as well.

    well i live in caringbah 5 mins away from cronulla.
    well before all the other guys reply in regards to always having a fuel filter i might just take this opportunity to say that the FZR never came with a filter. most bikes which have a gravity fed fuel system (ie: no fuel pump) dont have one. some mates at work told me this. i may just give you all an insight to my background. i work for QANTAS as an aircraft engineer and before that i worked as a mechainc on cars. this is where my tech knowledge comes from but i dont have much of an idea about bikes. its all new to me. but im willing to learn and get in there and get my hands filthy. all engines are the same regardless if from a car or bike so this makes trouble shooting easier its just bits are a lot smaller.
    what i plan on doing once i get the head back from the machinist is trying an inline fuel filter in the reserve line. the reason for this is so i can tell if the restrictions within the filter cause any power decreases due to restricted flow. ill also try different brands of filters to see which one performs best then ill let u guys know the results.
    apparently the way the manufacturers got away with not having a fuel filter was to put drain screws in the float bowl of the carbi and recomends to drain the fuel out of the carbi once a month or so.......... now really......
    who could be bothered doing that.......not me.
    no i have not rang the guy who i bought it off although i would not mind doing a drive by <!-- s:sniper: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_snipersmilie.gif" alt=":sniper:" title="Sniper" /><!-- s:sniper: --> just kidding.
    from the intelect of the guy i bought it off i think his reply would be..... a fuel what??? where does that go????
    anyway i keep you all posted
    one last point how do i post pics cause i was thinking of writing a small tech article on how to do the job with a few pics of it along the way. the FZR400 manual is good but quite brief so i may elaborate on it and put in a few extra pointers to help out any of you who decide to do it as well.

    good to see u wanting to learn more about ur bike.. im lazy .. i just send it to the mechanic.. but then .. some mechanics over look things... like my exup cable.. its about to snap.. i only found out when i was ploshin my frame up.. so its usually best to work on the bike yaself.. after all shes the only one who would let u ride her 24/7 !

    Hey i got a fuel filter in mines how come yours dose't have i one. Also the 3ln model Fzr250R suppose to have in an fuel pump. I have a fuel pump in mines also. What model do you have again?

    No offence bro but if you want more power buy a larger bike and if you think about if with a fuel pump driven fuel system your not going to get much power with diffrent fuel filters case the pump is only going to pump a sertain amount of fuel to the carbs, regardless of fuel filter. Of course if you have a trully **** filter than the bikes going to run lean and you might make power down low but lose it up high in the revs. ( I too have alittle know how in this, was offerd to work for Honda but na Yamaha all way). Remember you can only supply a sertain amount of fuel to the carbs through a pump, thats why when u stick a larger turbo on a car or bike for that matter you have to upgrade the pump, fuel injectors, fuel rail and pressure regulator etc etc to flow more fuel to the combustion chambers to stop detonation etc.

    I gess what I am saying is that from a little experence fuel filters arnt going to make a hell of a diffrence. Also fuel filters dont aways pick up tar and other such crap so the drain of the float bowl is for that also. If I have got anything wrong please by all means correct me

    well i know what ur getting in regards to the loss power being negliable due to a fuel filter in a system with a fuel pump but if read a little closer then you may have seen that i wrote gravity fed system (ie: no fuel pump). fuel will drain under gravity unrestricted to the carby but if one was to put a filter in the line then it will restrict it.
    my bike is a 1994 3ln-3 imported in 2001.
    tell me me more in reagrds to the fuel pumps
    are the mechanical or electric

    Ok, I dont quite understand what you are trying to do. The FZR250r EXUP 3LN regardless to the year has a eletric fuel pump, one to note this would be to turn the fuel switch to OFF and then run the motor till it was out of fuel and then turn off then on. You would hear the fuel pump ticking, this is the pump trying to suck fuel from a tank which has had the switch turned off. So that no fuel would get through. Regardless whether the fuel supply system is gravity feed or pump feed your fuel system should have a filter in the main line from the fuel tap to the pump or on a gravity feed system from the tap to the carburetor. What I was simply pointing out was that if you were to put a fuel filter in the reserve line you would not be getting fresh fuel intill you were to switch the tap to reserve. Your fuel pump should be connected via a fuel line to the main line that runs from the fuel tap whether the tap is on reserve or on. Unless you are talking about doing this experment on a gravity feed bike.

    I gess I look at it like this, whats a loss of a 1/4 of a HP to have a fuel filter in the line than to have no fuel filter and have 1/4 HP more power than only to have my engine die early due to crap fuel.

    The 2kr has a fuel pump as well (with a filter in it). I also have an in-line filter added to mine courtesy of the previous owner.

    well gday again
    today i took the FZR400 manual to my bike and looked at the wiring diagrams and my bike is supposed to have an electric fuel pump. i put a multimeter across the terminals to see if it was powered and found that it was. for some unknown reason the previous owner removed the pump. i now have to source a new pump for it.

    Is this FZR that you bought mostly Yellow with blue? If it is, by the sounds of it I am glad that I didn't buy it. I went down to Cooma (was going to Canberra anyway) and checked it out, I also had a bike mechanic friend from Canberra come with me have a good look at it who told me not to buy it. I'll see if I can get the specific's of what was wrong with it from him, sorry I can't remember what he said. I looked at lots of bikes before getting the one I did.

    If I was a member of this forum I could have perhaps warned you but it sounds like you have pretty good mechanical knowledge anyway so you can do most work yourself & hopefully not cost you lots of cash which it probably would me.

    well yes as a matter of fact it is that bike. did he take it to his workshop to let u see it???? by a shell servo????? if u can find out what reasons your mate said dont buy it, it would be greatly appreciated
