Hey new member here. i have had my Yamaha FZR 250 Genesis for about 1 year now its a 1998 model and well i been having troubles as im only 17 and not exactly a car/bike person i know nothing about engines so i took it into the bike shop and i need to replace my Regulator. I am living in Cairns, Queensland Australia and i need to find a place that i could get a new regulator for my bike if any of you have contact details of places where i can get them in australia that would be great i really dont want to have to get it shipped from japan cause i dont exactly have that kind of money at the moment damn <!-- s:cop --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cop.gif" alt=":cop" title="Cop" /><!-- s:cop --> always catch you at the wrong times <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt="" title="Sad" /><!-- s -->
if u go to any auto elec in your area they SHOULD be able to supply u with a universal regulater/rectifier.. u will probably be looking around the $140 mark. u need one for a 3 phase stator, so on the regulator there should be a negative wire (which goes to ground), a positive wire (which goes to the battery and then there should be 3 wires that are the same colour (usually are either white or yellow, but could be any colour depending on the reg make), those 3 wires then go to the 3 white wires that come from the stator (which is mounted on the right hand side of the bike inside the engine). and thats it.. i know this works too, as when i bought my bike it wasnt charging.. i didnt check how much it would cost to get original, but i couldnt be stuffed chasing one up and waiting for it to get posted to me. good luck
So u cant make one for us Sparky? lol I think my charging system is stuffed too...The battery is charging..but only at like 12 volts....and thats with the headlight off! What would be the reason for this? Checked the diods on the rectifier and they are fine, does that mean the rectifier is ok? or not.
Regulator available I have a FZR regulator available, as I am in the process of wrecking/ selling my bike. It's in excellent condition. Im guessing the regulators the same for 3ln and 2kr? well the rectifier side might be okay, but there is also a voltage regulator built in with the rectifier (which is the diodes). so if the voltage regulator is stuffed then it wont charge.. i had the exact same thing. if u get a hold of some multimeters, unplug the plug to the rectifier and start the bike, now with the multimeters set to AC volts, check each of the white wires coming from the side of the engine.. u should have around 18 volts when u rev it up.. if u get that, then the stator in the side of the motor is okay and its just the rectifier/regulator is stuffed.
that first bit might have sounded confusing.. the rectifier is another name for the diodes that change the AC volts output from the stator to DC volts.. the regulator obviously just regulates the amount of DC current/volts that charges the battery
My bike model is a 1989 2KR, 1HX engine series bike. I think the regulator should be universal for both models. If anyone wants parts, let me know, as I am in the process of wrecking/selling my bike. when i got my bike it wasn't charging properly either - was getting low 12V with the engine running. Couldn't find anything wrong with the R/R or the stator but cleaned all the wires coming out of the regulator thingy (especially the red one) and the connections and sprayed with WD40 and this seemed to sort it out. Also i think there is an officially imported yamaha bike which has the same regulator/rectifier part - just can't remember what model - some guy at Peter Stevens service centre (north melbourne) told me over the phone a while back.
That wouldn't happen to be the Yamaha Zeal would it? The FZR and Zeal have almost identical engines on the exterior. Internals are all different though... Just a thought. Chris.
