I want to repaint my can but like most things about bikes I am a bit clueless. It looks like it has been repainted before I bought it (paint over the exup sticker) but has been dropped and affected by salt water is my guess. I have had a look around but haven’t found anything about painting a muffler. I was looking for someone with some experience in the area to give me a few pointers.

Here is a pic I took of it.

    I hope that worked.

My plan of attack is paint stripper and then some kind of high heat paint.
Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a new exup sticker from, want it to look like deans 2003 FZR in the gallery (very nice bike).

    Thanks in advance.

Powder Coat would be the best thing to do...

I suggest that you don't do a home spray can job on the can. It will look worse than what it does now.

I wouldn't worry too much about the exup sticker. Doesn't really add much in my opinion. If you can find one, great. If not oh well. I doubt that a regular decal (like the ones Dean has discussed) would withstand the heat on the muffler.

High temp paint goes up to like 600 degrees I think. Which is more than enough for the can. If u stripped the paint back, I dont see why it wouldn't come out half decent?

Yeah I think RVZ is right about the spray can thing. Looking at a nice air compressor, been threatening to buy one for a while now but I think it might be the time. I will be going down to the store today to check if I can get h.t. paint with nice shiny enamel finish.

I never heard about powder coating bike parts till FZR dude mentioned it. I had a look around town but in Canberra as with most things not much to be seen, although I did talk to a place on the phone but they said it would take a week. My cage just blew a head gasket and so riding the bike with no muffler for a week as fun as it sounds isn’t really a possibility.

Cheers for the replies, off to see what I can find down the shops.

Most off the shelf paints (especially the high temperature ones) aren't very good quality. The aerosol mist is too coarse for the fine finish that you are seeking and they frequently suffer from premature flaking brought about by poor or unrefined paint quality. However, a good spray gun and high pressure compressor will definately do a more professional job (just find some really good quality automotive paints).

Or alternatively, save yourself the hassle and get someone else to do it.

Looks like i might have to put off the can for a few weeks. My cage head gasket and rings are buggerd. Just got off the phone with the weakers and he said he can have one that works at my door on the weekend for $400. I will have to make do with a bit of pollish. <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: -->
