    hey all,
i just bought my bike a couple of days ago and think that i should take it to a mechanic to get the carbies tuned/balanced.

does anyone know any good, honest mechanics that really know their fzr250's in the sydney are?

    thanks.

I bought my bike (89 2KR) damaged and took it down to Tony Magri Motorcycles in Kingsgrove. It still there as i get paid next week. The damage on the bike (mechanically):
    - Bent front forks (that he said he could fix rather than replaced at $300)
    - Regulator or Alternator Dead
    - Need new battery
    - Exup needed replacing?? something about using brass instead of the cermaic?
    - Brake leaver borken and the front brakes werent working and the brake fluid bottle above the leaver needed replacing
    - Indicator Cover replaced
    - Oil/Filter Change
    - Checked up the rest of the bike and hasnt found anything major.
    - He also tried to get it bluesliped 3 times but the guy kept on finding things until he said the fairings need to be fixed. (My dads mate will take care of that)

So far Tony is telling me that without the Exup thingys its going to cost me just under$300 and about $150 for the exup stuff.

This bike was a wreck when i bought it and for $450 to mechanically fix it sounds pretty good to me. He also had afew fzrs there so he knows what his talking about. My mate told me about him. I think his a good honest mechanic.

Never heard of that... Don't know the difference between ceramic or brass. I thought the exup valve was made of steel.

Well he told me that he needed two of these things and they where going to cost about $60 each. Also, he said there being custom made or something so he is making about 4pairs at the same time.

Does that make any sense? I'll give him a bell and ask what these cermaic/brass things are exactly if it doesnt.

Doesn't make sense to me, but it may make sense to some other members. I am just trying to figure out what specific part he is referring to. Needing 2... I can only think of the 2 exup cables and perhaps talking about the ends of the cables being brass rather than ceramic (and $60 / cable is about right).

Maybe someone else on this forum can shed some light...

He may be talking about the bushings in the valve, althought I thought that there was only one. I'll have to check the parts fiche...

Well, yes and no.... There is one bushing on the far end of the valve, and a collar on the near end close to the cables. For my bike, the two LIST for $7.50 and $5.50 USD (respectively). Both of the cables list for $30.25 ea.

If he does put a ceramic bushing in there, I'd be curious as to how it holds up to the punishment. Please let us know what you find out.

cermaic bushing! thats what he was talking about..

i'll discribe the problem i was having.. when i started the bike, it would make a clinking sound like there a nail or screw in the exhaust that would just rattle. But once u rev to about 7rpm+ the sound goes away. Now Tony told me he thought the bushings where shattered or broken? and that the brass ones where stronger and would hold up.. im going in to see him on thursday.

If this sounds alittle funny what should i be asking him?

The valve - when the cables are loose - will rattle just due to vibration. THis may not be indicative of bushings. When you get up to 8000+ revs the valve actually starts to open and there may be enough tension on the cables to stop the rattling.

Perhaps check to make sure the exup cables are taught before you go replacing parts. To check - look under the side stand and you will see a metal cover (probably covered in grease/grime). Take this off - you will need to remove 3 alan key bolts. You will then see 2 cables. Push on these - they should be quite tight and perhaps only have a few mm of give. If more then the cables are too loose. The adjustment for these are under the left rear fairing - unscrew to tighten.

Check this thread at exupbrotherhood for some pics of the cables and what you should be looking for (look at the pic right above the virgin bike).

I just rang Tony Magri with reagdrs to getting my carburettors cleaned. He said he doesn't want to touch the bike due to the last two he worked on. He said it just takes too long to fix and is too hard to do.

What is it with our bikes? This is the 2nd mechanic that has turned me down and my current one isn't too keen to work on it, I know its a grey import but I always end up sourcing parts for the bike rather than getting the mechanic to do it.

Can anyone give me an estimate on how much carburettor cleaning should cost?

Sorry to say, but the amount of criticism i've heard of the various 4 pot screamer 2-fiddys... out beloved FZR cops a fair bit of it; and primarily due to extremely fussy carbs (supposedly) <!-- s:( --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt=":(" title="Sad" /><!-- s:( -->
I had a looksy the other day and gave the bell chamber (if thats what its called) a bit of a clean. Nothing obvious that looked dirty but FIIK. Other than draining the bowels i'm not great with carbs... but it's on my list to learn.

i think he wont work on fzr250's again because of me : (

it took about 10 visits and alot of hasseling around to get it to a ridable state (ridable meaning it will start again when ive left the mechanics).

even with these 10 visits the bike aint going 100%.. i says its about 70% now.. they are a pain in the ass these bikes, but once there working there pretty awesome (not that i know what im talking about)
