Hey guys, more dramas with my bike that never runs. My mechanic mate called me today after taking the bike to give it a full service tune and all that. The bike wouldn't start when I gave it to him. And he said: "The engine could be dead mate, it sounds like it's turning over too easily I'll run a compression test in the next couple of days and see what I come up with" Now to me him saying "The engine could be dead mate" wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear, afterall I got it started the day before he picked it up but the idle screw was all the way down and it stalled when I took the throttle off, but sadly wouldn't start again. What do yall in your expert opinions think is wrong, has anyone ever had this problem? How farkin much would a new engine or parts cost me if a cylinder was cracked or some crap like that **** forbidd ????? Bah this bike is annoying me I just want to ride it and all I get is problems <!-- s:cry: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cry.gif" alt="" title="Crying or Very sad" /><!-- s:cry: -->
Maybe, just have to wait for the gauge readings. Anyone know what the compression is on the FZR250? My money is still on the carbs. When you had the bike running did it rev all the way to 18,500 or did it top out before redline?
A new engine could run between $1000-$1500. You may be able to find better deals on those too depending on the dealer. As for it being dead - If you had it running the day before i doubt that would be the case. As a question - do you trust this mechanic? Have you heard good / bad things about him? My bet is still on carbies and spark plugs - as ciaran says. There is low compression in these bikes (relatively speaking) so it could sound like it is turning over too easy - particularly if the mechanic hasn't had much experience with fzr's.
Carbie cleaner down the guts of it.. When mine wouldnt start it was cos everything gunked up and locked up, and it just turned over and over without even trying to fire..
yeah I reckon the mech doesn't know everything just yet, he's a mate of a mate and doing me a cheap deal so I have to go with him due to my budget. I just rang him up and passed on the info from you guys so hopefully it will help.
Take the carbs to a garden machinery shop and get them to clean them, they usually have an ultra sonic cleaning bath to clean bits of lawn mower carbs that get gunked up when they sit unused.
Ok I had my compression checked recently, and the mechanic said its at the right level. From memory it was about 125 - 140 PSI.
