Hey Guys, I work in the City 2 days a week. Work in Martin Place. Do any of yous know a good (free) place to park your bike around this area? a 5 minute walk wouldnt be too bad as well, so it doesnt have to be in Martin Place or anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
ha ha i'd say on the footpath outside your work, but then you don't live in vic, heh!?? we do have some advantages down here despite the f'd up speeding laws.
surely you jest!? simon
I work at 255 george which is close to martin place. there are two places that I park. either Lang St or Curtin Place. Both are bike only parks and you can park there all day.
Well originally it was suggested that we go for the classic British look of the sideways numberplate over the front wheel guard; but then road safety decided it would slice up pedestians, children & small animals. Then it was decided we could have miniature plates and have them underneath the headlight... but given how different every bike is; that was too tricky to implement. Now they want us to stick goofy looking decals (stickers) with the numberplate printed on them to the front of our bike; ideally just above the headlight... kinda on the windscreen. Only problem then is what do you do with a naked bike - their response... you can have a little bracket thet you can stick the decal to. ALL AT OUR EXPENSE! Pffft... - No front number plates! - No Citylink tolls for bikes! - Bring on a LAMS scheme for Victoria! - End the tyranny of the 'Flash for Bracks' speed camera's!
Nope - Koma's post pretty much summarised the process. They have spent millions on developing a solution, and seem to have accepted that the decal is the only possible solution to this and they are now performing accelerated environmental testing to see how well they will fare. I should note that all states have been supporting this project (lead by victoria) so if it is implemented here, and is successful, other states may adopt them too. As Koma has said nakeds will need to buy some sort of mounting bracket. However, this has a side-effect too! Insurance companies regard this as an 'aftermarket add-on' and they may invalidate some peoples insurance policy, or will cause an increase in premium because of after-market parts (if your bike is fully stock - consumables not included - you can usually get cheaper insurance - and if you fail to inform the agency of aftermarket parts they may not pay out if an accident occurs). Further to this the manufacturers are against the aftermarket bracket because they say it will change the aerodynamics of the naked bike (didn't know they had any aerodynamics ) and they will not be responsible for any handling problems that arise. They removed front number plates in the late 70's because of safety issues, and are now thinking of re-introducing them because of safety issues. Some people speculate that there is probable only a 1 in 3 chance that they will be implemented though...
