After removing the headers to do a bit of work on them on the weekend, I noticed how much carbon had built up from before I replaced my emulsion tubes. I went down and picked up some of this stuff from the local Subaru dealer and gave it a go.

Whoa when they say use in a well ventilated area they must be talking of a field on a windy day! I thought the neighbors where going to call the fire brigade after all that nasty **** started pouring out the exhaust.

I flushed out the coolant as well and then took it for a spin. It was noticeably smoother and sounded allot better as well. I think it may have picked up a bit of power too.

All in all, for $17 a can it is well worth it and I would recommend anyone thinking about it to give it a go.

(Note: I do not work for and are not affiliated with the above mentioned cage manufacturer, in fact I don’t like their cars at all.)

What exactly do you do with it?
Where do you pour/spray it?

Motul Brake Cleaner has the same effect. That **** will dissolve the plastics before your eyes if you can still see from them with all the fumes.

It comes in a spray can and is a white foam. It is supposed to dissolve and cleanout carbon deposits inside the cylinder, valves etc. I just took off the top of the air box and filter then sprayed it down the carbs into the engine and followed the instructions on the can.

The can doesn’t have any active ingredients on it but states that it is poisonous. What ever it is, the stuff did the trick, it is so much nicer to ride now.

Just remember that it is no good doing this inside the garage with the door open, go right out side in the open.

Just before i go buy a can of this all wondrous smoke making foam, a couple more questions.

How much of the can did you use?
Would multiple smaller treatments be better?
How much smoke are we talking? (what colour and how much... i live in the CBD and don't want the cops called out. )

The smoke is white with gray blue tinges to it at times. I used three quarters of the can but that was probably a bit of overkill since a can will do a car. I did it in my driveway when the wind was blowing into the street. The cloud is fairly large at first but dies down as the carbon is removed. It won’t travel much more than 4.5m before it disappears completely. The first part of the application involves spraying a whole lot of the stuff (maybe 1/4 can) into a warmed up engine and cranking it a couple of times, then let it sit for 5 to 10 min. After that you just keep cranking it till it fires up and spews all the smoke out, then when it dies down spray it into the carbs while the engine is revving. I guess you could do the second part separately once the heat has died down a bit.

I'll take along a magazine or two to pass the time.

How did you find out about this stuff?

I remember hearing about similar products a couple of times a few months ago, here and over at raaqi’s site twofifty.cc. Then when I was looking up stuff about the Jap Yahoo auctions on the skyline forum I saw where to get it. Did a search on the cbr forum and it came up with positive feedback so I thought I would give it crack.

I have the can in front of me, and it says 'Subaru Genuine Care' 'Upper Engine Cleaner'. I don’t think you can buy it online, it says to go to the dealer. Maybe another company makes one but I am unsure. The active ingredients are 'Aromatic Petroleum distillates' & 'Butyl cellosolve'. The first one just seems to be vaporized petrol but the second one is some real nasty stuff. Once again DO NOT get it on your skin or breathe in the smoke or fumes!

(It’s at the bottom of this page.)

ROFLOL... i hope it's more than that.
I'd be rather hesitant about spraying oven cleaner into an engine.

Hahaahaha nice.

Yeah I don’t think you will find petrol in an ordinary oven cleaner but I think the other stuff has been taken out of most oven and household cleaners because it is so dangerous. The stuff is a water based solvent that has many uses in industrial cleaning.

so what all you did was buy this stuff and spray it in your airbox?
BTW does anyone esle gaffa-tape up their airbox to make it "airtight"?

Oh and has anyone used some of that carby cleaner petrol additive stuff you can buy? As you can see I'm trying the lazy ways out of cleaning up my carbs a bit if it is at all possible.

I used Wynns carb cleaning stuff when i first got my bike and it seemed to make a little bit of a difference. I wasn't overly impressed with it though, so i've never bothered using it since.

Haven't had a chance to go get some of the Suby 'new upper engine in a can' stuff yet, but i'll let everyone know how it goes if/when i do try it.
