Hi all,

Just got a second-hand dainese leather jacket. It's in great condition for $150, just wanted to know how to clean it up, both on the inside and out, without damaging it. Do drycleaners do this reliably??

Regards,
Damien.

I've been pointed towards a product called 'Sno Seal'.
I've been meaning to give my jacket a good clean and rejuvination, but havent really had the time, nor effort.

One thing, be cautious about using some products on leather jackets incase they have organic stitching. Supposedly some products will cause the stitching to rot, weakening it badly.

I use stuff that is made for use on leather couches. It has a cleaner and a conditioner and costs about $20 from the local motorbike shop. Any leather or bike shop will stock cleaning and conditioner products.

thanks

Thanks guys,

You are really a helpful bunch of lads. I'll see to the jacket, any ideas for cleaning the inside (of the jacket!).

Regards

Re: thanks

What sort of cleaning is required? Does it smell? Are there stains?
I picked my RJays jacket up second hand and it smelt heavily of cigarette smoke, but i found just airing it out and riding with it has eliminated most of it. I also gave it a bit of a squirt with an 'odour eater' spray that i had in the house, although it didn't do much other than make me smell of flowers.

SnoSeal is the best to use. It also helps with keeping the rain from soaking in....of course not entirely waterproof though, but it sure makes the leather shine like new!

don't use dubbin... it rots the leather and the natural fibers (as mentioned previously).

Does the interior zip out? I'm guessing not otherwise you would've thrown it in the wash already

Go talk to your local dry cleaner if you're really worried. They'll at least be able to tell you if they can do it or not. I would assume they can, considering they dry clean swede jackets, etc.

There are some stains on the leather (only minor), but the smell of another dude's sweat and cigarette smoke is a bit off-putting. And yes, the lining is not removable.

I'll take it to a dry cleaner, and see what happens.

Cheers.

Dry Clean. It will cost about $60 and they will waterproof it for you in that process.
