G'day all.
I have recently become a FZR 250 owner and I am trying to find out as much about it as possible.I am also new to road bikes , only got my licence last week.
About the fuel economy I am only getting around 13km's/litre.I have seen people's post on this site saying the average is around 20km's/litre.If any one has any idea's on what the problem might be please let me know.
Thank's and safe riding,Browny

Country or city riding?

You way want to check to see if your carbies need to be cleaned, and retuned. The air screws need to be 3 turns out.
You can only blame the carbies for this.

If your usually getting 130 pre-reserve then it's not that bad. High speed (above 100km/h) riding eats fuel on small bikes, cruising at 150km/h will eat an insane amount of petrol.

Also, do you have a fuel pump?

Air filter will contribute to this as well. I used to get 170km on a tank, now i get 140. An old air filter will not allow the bike to breathe right, so it'll run rich.

Replace your air filter, get your carbs looked at... You should get better economy.

This is true that I am getting 130km's on 10L, and yes I do have a fuel pump that also makes a very funny noise when you turn the key on.Sounds like a popping noise.Haven't checked the air filter yet but will do asap. Spoke to a bike mechanic today and he reckons that it shouldn't flood if the fuel tap isn't turned off when parked, like mine does. Anyone with any idea's?

the fuel pump noise when you switch the ignition on is normal, there's also the noise of the exup resetting itself which is a differnet, mechanical sort of noise (yep its hard to describe).
Air filter could well be a problem - like Raaqi i have seen my fuel economy come back from about 190km/10l to around 160km/l after 15000km riding on the one filter. Probelm is they cost around $85 but you're sposed to change them every 10000km so mines well overdue. Keep in mind this only affects air intake - its a combination of air and fuel (carbies) which gives you the richness of the mixture in the cylinders.
When you look at the filter, if its grey and covered in dust it needs replacing (new ones are a nice clean white colour).
Oh and i never bother turning the fuel tap off after riding and don;t have any flooding problems - this should only be a problem if your parking the bike for more than a week or so i'd guess.

You mean a vreeeeep-vrooooop noise? or is it more of a whiiiieep-woooo?

hehe. I always jump at the chance to make 'typed sound effects'

fuel

On my 700km trek home the fuel economy started at about 15km per litre but once i got nearer to home it was at about 18.7km per litre. Mine normally gets about 15km per litre on average, but i do give her a floggin. On a seperate topic have any of you guys tried the reusable foam air filters? I have one in at the moment and it works great, i haven't cleaned it yet but its on my list of things to do! Also one more thing, i have seen some bikes in a state of being fixed and a few of them have 2 fuel filters on them, one between the tank and the pump and one between the pump and the carbs, do you think that this would be a wise mod to do to the fzr's or is it a bit over-kill.

Overkill. There is a mesh filter in the fuel tank, on both of the taps. There's the in-line one you have before the pump, and there's a third filter just inside the carbie intake valve (the plastic connection)

So another inline filter would pretty much do nothing but aggrivate the pump. Plus, pumps die hard if they get the smallest anount of gunk in them, so if your first filter wasn't catchin 99% of the problem, the pump would let you know.

I seem to use roughly the same amount of fuel no matter what sort of riding i do. I fill up around the 200-210km mark and thats pre-reserve. Usually put in about 11-12L of fuel
This is for a 1990 3LN-1 fzr250

Hey guys, damn 200-210km thats heaps. i only got 150km and what sucked was that my reserve tank didn't work so i had to call my sister to come pick me up.

just wondering, what is the average rpm at about 60km/h?

Wow 200kms seems a bit far fetched? Thats like vtr250 standards?
Anyway, the bike shouldn't flood when parked..even after a week, though its generally good practise to turn ur fuel off if you leaving your bike for any period of time.

Check the float heights..as this is prob the cause for flooding.

Filled up after a long run last weekend on all country roads including lots of hills, winding roads mostly sitting on 80 - 110kph and one trip to work and made 200km on exactly 9.96L

Thats easy to work out, 5litre per 100Km or 20Km per litre. Thats on a 2KR
and is the best I have ever done.
