Hey Guys,

Been a while.

I seem to have misplaced my key. Now this is abit of pain because I don’t have a spare and no locksmith wants to come down and make a copy.

I called up the mechanic and he said to take the screws out of the ignition and send it to 'miranda locksmith'. Now I went to do this but it seems a little harder than the way he explained.

My question is has anybody taken the ignition out of one of these bikes. If so how? Details, pictures, video. Anything to help me understand how to get a key copied for this.

BTW, its a 2kr. I live near Hurstville Sydney. I don’t mind paying somebody (locksmith) to look at it if anybody knows of any who are willing.

Thanks for all your help.

Sherif

I have a mate who's having a similar problem with a ZZR250... he's pretty much climbing up the walls trying to get a key for it. My advice for all those who don't have a spare... GO GET ONE CUT IMMEDIATELY!!!

The advice he's currently chasing is from our resident improv guru TBone who has apparently had some luck in the past by removing the lock from the seat and getting a locksmith to make up an extra key from that.

The other advice, is that if you had the number from the key (some times they used to also stamp it on the chassis) you 'might' be able to get a spare from a dealership... but given that our little Fizzer's never officially were sold in Australia, i'd say you've got 3/5th's of no chance of that happening.

bad luck! I haven't removed my lock before, but am glad to hear it is not easy to take out.

have a look at the fzr400 manual - it should be the same sort of procedure to remove it.

I would agree with koma 100%. Save yourself the trouble and get a copy NOW. As in during Lunch, or on the way home.

Ok, this screw that bolts the ignition together, how do i take that off and with what tool? It looks funny, should i post a pic of it or you know what im talking about

Is there only 1 tool that i need for the whole job or acouple??

Also, with what koma said about the back lock. I thought of that but when having a look at the lock and the ignition lock i cant see the back lock having the amound of detail as the ignition meaning even if i copied the back lock, it wont work on the ignition. am i correct in saying this or is the back lock just as detailed as the ignition.

Thanks for your help guys. I guess its a good thing that this aint easy but there should be a simpler way. (Like a locksmith that will come to your house)

The bolts that hold the ingnition in are security screws for anti-theft. The lock on the seat should be identical to the one in the ignition and in the fuel-cap. Of which you can take that just as easy. Maybe even easier since it is just held on with allen bolts.

I think it is agreed that YOU SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 2 KEYS FOR YOUR BIKE!!!

Probably, I have one key for all the locks. I only had one key for my bike for about 3 months until I got some cut. I was so paranoid about loosing one I went on a search to find someone that would actually cut me one. I went to about 3 locksmiths that screwed me around saying they couldn’t do it, one even said they would have to order a blank from overseas. I am never going back there for sure. I then went to the dealer who put me onto a decent locksmith and I got 3 cut so I would never have to go through all the BS again.

Ive done it its not too hard.. you need al the fairings off.. Im not really an explainer type... but it was quite easy to take the ignition off.. I installed my own key as the person i brought the bike from had lost the keep and smashed the ignition thing with a rock and used a screw driver to start LOL.. I couldnt have that

Ha. I got 3 keys, one for each part. The fuel tank and Ignition keys both have yamaha engraved on the plastic. The fuel tank key is also verrry short compared to the other two.

I think I'm going to go get a copy of each key.

Man, that is the absolute height of irony.
Bummer mate.

For what it's worth, your post had one positive effect - I just went and got a copy of my only keys. Cheers.
