Hey guys, I'm becoming a frequent visitor to this forum, must be the good advice.. Anyway, i'm having an issue when riding in slow traffic up steep hills. In Brisbane traffic is exponentially multiplying for some reason on main roads, way outside the city centre. There is one b*tch of a street that i need to go through that has a giant climb with a set of traffic lights just over the top. This means a constant slow climb at very slow speeds. The first time i came to this hill i just read it like i was in a car, get smoothly into first (slowly), then apply constant subtle throttle working the clutch if necessary. Unfortunately on my little FZR250, it started to bog down and make a noise suggesting it was about 180yrs old and on its last leg. Then.......a violent and embarassing stall. Is it just the gear ratio on these little 250s? the power or lack thereof? Or is it my poor riding skills? I now take slow hills like this: Get to first and go as far as i can before stopping behind car infront, hitting the back brake, and doing a VERY high rev (9+) hill start, every time the car infront moves 5 meters. This sounds and looks silly, is there any other way? BTW, anything under those rev counts and the bike just slows right down and dies again. Thanks in advance guys, Damien.

My driveway is fairly steep and would I only hit 8 max going up it after waiting for the automatic garage door to open.
If your only doing city riding like that i'd recommend dropping 2 teeth off the front sprocket. Makes slow speed riding ALOT easier! Less clutch work around town... but the downside is more shifting when your out of town (and higher cruising RPM). Definitely check the carbs out aswell as Ciaran said. In a bad state of tune and out of balance it'll suck away what little low end power our bikes have. You should be able to wind out (albeit very slowly!) from about 15km/h in 4th gear pretty easily. If it bogs down when trying to do that then it's definitely a carb tune & balance.
I have a similar problem because of my steep driveway. If I hit the gutter coming off the street below 3000rpm there is no way I will get to the top unless I slip the clutch and rev the crap out if it. Over 3000 and it accelerates all the way up. DAVE
I had the exact same problem with mine when I bought it. Whats more, you describe the method for overcoming the problem exactly how I did it. I took it to my bike mechanic and he cleaned the carburettors and balanced them. Total cost $300 (included some other adjustments) Bike worked a treat after that.
The carbs were just cleaned! Only about 70kms ago.... which fixed the starting problems. This problem only happens when i'm slowing right down. If i come to a complete stop, i can do a hillstart no probs. Also, this street is way steeper than any driveway i've seen, it's a freak! If anyone knows brisbane city, it's even steeper than Creek street, off Ann! Does cleaning the carbs imply a carb tune and balanace, or do i have to specifically ask for that? The mechanic is a family friend, so he spent 6 hrs on the bike for about $200. Thanks again guys, Damien.
Ajustment of the carbs and exup will cure this problem. Wiring it slightly further open than stock dramatically helps with low down bogging.
LOL I lived in Brisbane and I think I know the streat.... It does sound like the carbys are out of balance... I dought the problem lies with the jetting but it might be an idea to check the float levels and make soure tey are all the same... also the niddle has a bad habbit of wearing out..
