Fuel pump and filter question?

    Hi all,

    Just a quick query....

    Should the fuel pump run all the time the engine is on? Mine just seems to 'blip' every couple of seconds for a split second and the clear fuel filter is usually only 1/4 full of fuel?

    I would have thought the pump would run all the time and the filter would stay full. otherwise it can just suck air in? <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: -->

    Any ideas?

    The fuel pump will keep on "blipping" like you describe... it has some sort of preasure sensor and it only turns on when it gets below a certain preasure...

    is your pump a big bulky square looking thing or a round one??

    Cheers Pete, it's a round one - not the original FZR250 pump, Koma said it was from a different bike - a 600 if I remember right?

    wont it suck air in if the filters not full though?

    If no fuel leaks from the lines it is theoretically air tight, so the air in the filter has probably been their for some time (installation or running the tank dry) with no ill effects. My fuel filter has the same bubble in it, nothing to worry about.

    Only reason I ask is twice now I have had probs with what seems to be fuel starvation....

    On monday it started fine after work, I idled it for a minute while I got myself sorted out when I went to pull off it went for 10 metress then just died - it would idle if you kept the throttle fully open but if you released it it would die again. I switched to reserve in case it was low and after a lot of messing around it revved up and ran ok. I rode to the nearest servo and filled up, it took just over 10 litres - is 10 litres about the capacity of the main tank?

    Today, after I had had the fuel lines off the pump (to fit new hose clamps) it started ok, I rode to the petrol station and filled up (it wasnt low but I need to get to work in the morning) about a minute later it did the same thing as monday, it died at a junction and wouldnt rev. after a minute or so of trying I eventually got it to rev and it seems ok again now.

    I guess what Im asking is:

    is 10 litres about the capacity of the main tank?
    are my symptoms typical of the main tank running out? I would have thought with an electric fuel pump it would start easier after switching to reserve?

    Is it a 2kr or a 3ln?
    If you think it is lacking in fuel pressure you can always flick the kill switch off and on again to get the pump to prime the lines, if its already pressurized than you shouldn’t hear anymore than a couple of ticks. The description you gave does sound allot like running out of fuel. Did you clean the lines when you had them off?

    It sounds like flooding to me next time it happens try switching the fuel tap to off for 10-15 seconds (while holding full throttle to keep it going) then back to on if i am right it should rev up and you should be right to go. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

    very odd... I did play around a wee bit with those carbes <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> Koma never mentioned any thinkg like it.. (defenatley not after I played with them) So my thoughts are geared twards a kink in the fuel line?? (the pump does sit in an akward position) or perhaps it was just low on fuel...

    Have you considered the fuel tap?? it has lots of rubber bits in it... they have a tendency to die after a while and screw up fuel supply...

    It's the 3LN. I dont think its flooding as both times it has started fine and just died a minute or so later.

    I guess it could be a kink in the fuel lines but it normally runs fine.
    At the moment I'm leaning towards it sucking air in (as the first time it was low on fuel and the second time I had disconnected the fuel lines beforehand).

    I'd just be happier if the fuel filter had more fuel than air in it <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: -->

    might be worth taking the filter off and priming it with fuell then sticking it back on. Would that work? <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: -->

    I had a prob like this and it was the fule tap. If the tap has a prob can the pump suck in air?

    Knowing the bike intimately helps...

    To me it doesnt sound like a fuel startvation problem... quite the opposite actually. What your describing sounds to me like it's temporarily flooding - and may happen if it's running too rich, if the bike is still cold, or if the carbs have managed to get gunk in them.

    A quick explanation about the fuel pump (it's off a ZZR600 btw... there was a 5 page thread discussing what was possible to use). When you switch on the bike and hear the exup do it's sequence, you shouldn't hear the fuel pump click more than once or twice. If it clicks repeatedly (perhaps 5 or more times) then it's having trouble priming and you need to switch over to reserve.

    When you say that the bike will keep running with the throttle pinned open, chances are it doesn't sound like it's running healthily - but just kicking over; might even be able to tell that it's running very rich whilst doing that, but that depends on how well you know the bike and the sounds it makes. If you snap the throttle shut when it's doing this 'just' running, it will stall - no doubt about it. If you very very gradually roll of the throttle then you'll hear it un-flood itself and start running properly. It should right itself within 10 seconds.

    I know when i was learning the finer points of the bike, it was certainly something that gave me problems (that and hill starts and not giving it enough revs!); but in time it wasnt an issue, just something you knew.

    By any chance, did you roll off the throttle and let it wind down by itself as you were approaching a stop?

    PS. Easiest way to tell what the bike (and carbs) are doing is to listen to the exhaust note...
    - If it's burbling quite a bit it's running rich.
    - If it starts to sound quite light and almost metallic then it's leaning out.
    It's just something you pick up over time i guess.

    well the carbes on these bikes are a ...... to set up good and proper... on top of every thing the ware and tare on them makes it more difficult.

    Also the importers take out the fuel pumps coz after sitting in a warehouse for a time the the fuel pumps get pluged up with jelly from the Japonise petrol (I seen this on my 2KR yuck)... so in the end you have a bike that is rnning a bit rich through higer RPM and a bit lean in lower RPM (without the pump) or rich in low RPM and ideal fuel/air mixture in high RPM (with the proper pump)

    Sounds pretty much spot on... both times its done it the engine has been cold (running for a couple of mins or so max.)

    Im pretty sure I tried shutting the throttle slowly, as well as blipping it, holding it on slightly, etc etc. It certainly wasnt 'idling' properly, more burbling like you say. Ill try letting it warm up a bit more before riding off (means getting used to the choke I guess as I normally just keep it at a fast idle on the throttle for a minute before riding off slowly for the first few mins.) <!-- s:angel: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_angel.gif" alt=":angel:" title="Angel" /><!-- s:angel: -->

    Yep, that's pretty much the trick that i learnt to live with.
    I leave it to warm up and idle for a minute (few minutes if possible) and if the revs rise dramatically with the choke on then it's time to push the choke back in and it should idle happily. If it's still having a few issues, then it's just a matter of keeping it in the back of your mind that you need to keep a little tiny bit of throttle on (just enough to take the slack out of the cable), when pulling the clutch in.

    It will no doubt just become second nature to you after a little while - just a matter of learning the nuances of the individual bike.

    I'm sure you'll agree i did try and explain everything i possibly could remember then and there about the bike, including all the little tricks to keeping it running happily - guess i didn't include that bit. ;)

    LOL you realy should have had the expiriance of owning and riding a RZ250!!

    LOL the quirkiest bike in the world I'd say... hold it like that... keep the throttle like this... cholke up to there.. not one kick... never more then three.. B4 you do the BIG kick... now hold the throttle like this... let it warm up... not to long... and if you think it is ready check this... turn that... do't allow it to lean this way when ideling...

    AND THAT WAS B4 YOU GOT TO RIDE IT!!!

    Had one of those in my (shared) garage - it was my brother in law's. Great bike though. Although his liked to have one small kick them one big kick to start.

    I'm SO thinking of picking up one... Bruce has a very nice one just sitting there... but than I have been thinking of a TZR250... the later model with the DeltaBox frame... LOL the fairings off the FZR250 3LN should should just bolt accross... also i have seen a 2KR with a TZR engine...

    Right, the problem seems to be getting worse now...It happened twice on the way home from work tonight - it seems if you take off at anything under 4-5k revs it just bogs down and dies, leading to the previously discussed problem.

    I discovered it can be rectified by switching the fuel tap off and keeping it running on light throttle for a couple of mins or so. However its not what you want when lanesplitting or riding in slow moving traffic!!!!

    can I just lean the carbs off a bit or is it a full remove, strip, clean and inspect job <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: --> ?

    best thing you could do...

    might try and lean out the idle mixture screw... I think I set it to 3 1/4 or 3 1/2... lately I have been setting them to 3 (timbus) and 3 1/4 for... that other fellow with the red one... also check the float levels... I leaned out TimBuses right down to about 5mm below the mark... and it seams to run good though bit guttless <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> (soory Timbus... and you oil is still sittng im my garage with the bolt) after a while I'll play around with those carbys as they are a real mess <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->
