i had a low speed 'off' several months ago on the great ocean road, which resulted in some minor cosmetic damage to the bike (no structural damage). I've replaced the side fairing and fixed most things but finally got around to the light scratches on the exhaust can on the weekend.
Working from 250 grade sandpaper up to 1200 waterproof stuff and then metal polish, I got most of the scratches out - BUT - the area is now discoloured slightly compared to the rest of the can - and you can still make out the fine scratches from the sandpaper. Ie you can tell its been sanded back even though it looks reasonably good.
Long story, short question - Is there any way to get it as good as original? Maybe cut & polish??

Sand the whole can.

Or maybe a cut & poilish with a polish pad on a drill, but i doubt it

Is it Stainless or aluminium/alloy?

anything can be polished up nicely if you have the patience!!

Heres a pic of a turbo housing I polished using wet n dry and a cheap ebay polishing kit:

400 bhp and 400lb/ft torque ....(actually I think it was about 395 and 388 when last dyno'd but its got slightly bigger injectors and a touch more boost since then ) could go more but I prefer to keep it driveable on the roads

Take a look at cossie post on picture 2.

You will notice on the left, the tube of Autosol. Very good start and avalaible at supercheap and other outlets. (Also comes in a little can)

But the most important thing in the picture is on the right hand side. The cloth wheel attached to the power drill. When it comes to buff that is the Arnie Schwarzenegger of buff.

Just apply the autosol (or metal polish of your choice) to the area to be polished and buff away. The polish will go really black with tarnish and after continual buffing, you have some bling.

Highly recommended.

As i was saying to Cossie when he picked up his bike... i've only seen 2 Cosworth's on the road in Melbourne. One was yellow and had the massive whale tail, and the other was white... again with the whale tail.

That said, most people just say 'what the hell is that' until they accelerate away at rocket speeds then it's 'what the hell WAS that?!'

You really need to get all the scratches out with sandpaper, as you've worked your way up through the grades already you probably know what effect each grade will have, so just go back a few steps and keep repeating until you are happy.

once the scratches are pretty much out you can start the polishing. I got a cheap polishing kit off ebay which has worked really well. I cant find any on Aus ebay but look on ebay.co.uk... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/soft-metal-polish ... dZViewItem It comes with polishing compound which is more abrasive than autosol.

And another pic as a few people seem to know what a Cossie is....
