after a quick ride like 30mins, i slow down and my bike cuts out and wont start. it has plenty of fuel and oil, its a fzr 250 89 model..
Some days it also just wont start feels like no fuel coming through to engine...

Could be any number of things...

1 Dirty carbs
2 Weak battery
3 Incorrect float heighs
4 Worn emulsion tubes
5 Valve Adjustment
6 EXUP out of adj (if applicable)
7 Clogged fuel tank vent
8 kaput fuel pump
9 Dirty filters (Air or Fuel)

1, 3, & 4 are all done/checked at the same time. I recommend #5 at the same time.
2, 6, 7, & 9 are simple to check and/or replace.
#8 is currently being discussed.

Hey, I had the same trouble on the same model, it used to die at the lights or whatever and would just stop for no reason after it was warmed up a bit etc...

So, what I did,

1) fixed & cleaned up the 'Exup' valve so worked smoother and didnt vibrate as tightnened and replaced wires etc
2) Balanced carbs, theres a great article in how to for both of these
3) adjusted idle screw to just that bit higher revs and found that did the trick

If any of this doesnt work for you, follow FZR dudes advice as he has helped me out a couple of times with straight advice.

P.S you can just try number 3) 1st as this is what really tipped it back into balance for me. Just whatever you do dont push the revs above 3 grand at idle as you might as well be pissing fuel away. ( The idle screw is in the center of the rear of the carbs just under the air box and is accessible without pulling the bike to bits etc)...

For my money, tis best to do the carbs and Exup as well as makes it a cleaner, smoother running system and you dont want to be worrying about the bike bogging & stalling etc when you stop start etc.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
Nate.

hey guys firstly great forums, I have been browsing them for quite a while. I did a search for this problem i've been having with my bike but found nothing quite like it but this is similar so i thought i'd ask.

See after running my bike for a while eveything goes good, but if i leave it off for a few minutes then when i go to start it again i hit the run switch and have to fully open the throttle for it not to stall and the revs stay at 3thousnd and dont move.

Then all of a sudden after like 3 or 4 goes the engines starts reving and runs like normal, at first i just thought this was vapout lock but Im not to sure now. Does this specifically point towards something in your opionons?

It sounds like the float heights need to be adjusted (lowered) what could be happening is that the Floats are a little high. This allows too much fuel into the bowls. When the bike is turned off, some of that fuel could seep into he combustion chamber, fouling the plugs causing the hard start condition.

Clean the carbs while you're in there and be sure to re-sync. when done. New plugs and air filter too.

edit: I could be wrong too.

Thanks for that advice, i'll definately take note of it. I think however the bike needs a full service. The guy i bought it off literally had no idea about it. He complained about a gearbox problem so once i owned the bike i ended up doing a lil work on it myself . The problem actually was that the bike had been on pretty much no oil for a month or so

:p

I am a noob. but i had that same problem.

I just did a fuel change. oil filter change. 4 new spark plugs. and now it starts first time.

edit: just to add.. my bike was in the same condition as you. the oil was LIKE serup. like paint!! sparks were charcoal~~

My carbs are still dirty. but i cant afford to fix that yet. will do it later.

Hmm just an update I think the float may well be the problem.
I have narrowed the problem during operation down. The bike seems to stall after running the bike for a while say 10 mins, furthermore i loose power mostly when going up hills.
I can resolve it by switching the fuel line to off and then starting the bike with the throttle on full open (the only way it will turn over) and waiting till it kicks in again.
Only problem is if this happens whilst goin up a hill on a sharp corner i'm boned.. bloddy gravity
