It’s a 3ln5 as per the table below lifted from a Jap Yamaha parts catalogue.

Yet if you go to Yamaha and ask for parts for a 3LN-5 FZR250 they'll look at you even odder than if you just ask for FZR250 parts. <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> It's these damn chassis number listings that have caused the confusion as on my frame it started with a 3LN-29####, as yes it's a 3LN3 (as verified by the table).

For all intents and purposes there are three main variants to the FZR250 - the 2KR, 3LN1 and 3LN3.

The 3ln 6~7 is another major variant with a fairly serious engine retuning. You can read up about it on Dave's website.

3LN6/7 i'd say was stepping away from the true heritage of the FZR and was more a financial part swapping exercise with later models of the Yamaha Zeal. I'd be interested to see if the later 6 & 7's still had the original 1HX engine.

That’s what the table says. My sister had a zeal before she went over to England and it had an engine number that started with 1hx also. Although I am unaware what year they started making the zeal.

I believe that Japan introduced restrictions on the 250 sport class limiting power to 40ps instead of 45ps, I think the single most contributing factor to the FZR250's demise. The CBR's where also subjected to the 40ps limit around the same time.
