hi guys, have read this forum all night (7pm-12:01am) and i have discovered that this is a wealth of knowledge, and have picked up many usefull tips through reading this forum.

Today i picked up my bike, it is a 1990 fzr250 3ln1 and i cannot wipe the grin of my face.

this arfternoon after sitting for about 4 hours, the bike would not start, the starter was working, it would just not fire. from what i could tell it was flooded, so i ran start it and it worked fine.

One thing that did concern me is the idling of the bike is not to flash, it fluctuates in sound and after about 2 mins it died , not a huge problem but i would like to know how to rectify this problem as i am a perfectionist. I got the manual but i can not for the life of me locate the idle screw, as from what i read this is the thingimebob that needs adjusting to fix the idleing problem.

The previous owner has told me that the bike is running a little bit rich, and from what i can gather this just means the the carbs are getting a slight abundance of fuel. My question is, is this a serious problem?

other than that at this stage the bike runs fine, i realise a 15 year old bike is going to have faults. i am not incredibly mechanicaly minded but i am a very quick learner and love to tinker with stuff, so this will all change in the near future. Thanks again guys and i look forward to seeing some of you guys around the joint.

they all run rich... very rich... too rich...

don't let it idle for long periods of time... even at the lights play withthe throttle... it will keep the sparkplugs clean...

this problem can be fixed eather bu replacing some bits in the carbs (needle, main jet, idle jet and screw) or adusting it for the worn parts... lots of fun there... but it can be done...

yeah i have been giving it heaps of revs everytime i have riden it, but the reason i did that was because i thought it sounded cool, but now i have an excuse to keep on doing it hahahahaha

Classic issue. Mine runs very well at idle since I lowered the needles a notch and adjusted the floats.

But I think I need the stock main jets. It runs just a little too lean in the higher RPM.

Anyways, if the issue bugs you (it really shitted me) then it's all in the carbies.

The idle screw is the big horizontal bolt that comes out between carb 2 & 3, just above the fuel hose that leads into the carbs.

today i went to fill my bike up, and i think i may have overfilled it, because when i finished riding back to my house (bout 2k's away) it was leeking fuel through a little pipe near the rear tire. I thought that there may have been a buildup of pressure in the fuel tank so i opend the cap and fuel spilled out , leaking stopped. Did i overfill the tank??? and is this leaking normal???

Yep, you overfilled it - simple as that; and yes that was the fuel overflow tube it was leaking out from.
Just a matter of following the actual user manual for the bike in this case, and filling it to the bottom of the fuel cap neck.

What fuel did you use?

Im guessing 91, but how bad would 96 be? apperently if you dont rev the engine enough there can be a problem with over fueling, would 96 octane offset this a little?

just a query....

I only run unleaded now, but used to run premium. There is no difference I can tell except for the co$$t. Stick with the 91.

'over fuelling' was supposed to say 'carbon buildup', sorry my bad...

thats good to know about the petrol difference, it seems that many people have different theories, but hearing some experience is alot better

still having trouble starting the bike, im not worried but its just a pain in the arse, cranks over just doesnt fire????? mate told me it could be spark plugs so ill check em out on the we

when im communting at around 60km/h, what rev range should i be aiming at keeping the bike in to avoid carbon buildup, atm i am averaging 6k to 8k rpm, is this alright or should i make my bike go even louder???

Try not to go below 7k for any extended amount of time / don’t make a habit of it. I probably don’t need to remind you but give it a chance to burn off the carbon with a good run in the hills, every week if you do alot of commuting. You could always get some ear plugs.

I recommend earplugs for any riding done over speeds of 40mph/65kph, but that's just me.

Not uncommon for me to do 60k/h in 2nd gear. Although I switch to third, perhaps even 4th if cruising at 60, and if i was doing 80k/h and slow to 60 i'll definately be in 4th.

Personally I find the fizzer has too many bloody gears. Its like 'red light'! Click, release clutch, Click, release clutch, Click, release clutch, Click, release clutch, Click... Brake.
Well at least I preserve the brake pads.

Just try using a 5 speed box after living with a 6 speed all your riding days then it'll mess with your head!

Oooh, and if you wanna know what quick shifting really is on the FZR250... try dropping 2 teeth off the front sprocket. Once i'd done that i had to upshift before i even got across intersections!
