Just thought i'd vent about what i was meant to be doing this weekend... and what actually happened!

The plan was simple, a bit of a service... ok and a valve clearance check to arrange for new shims parhaps a week or two later (or that arvo if i only needed to swap a couple). Well i started off and went over to Elizabeth St to do my shopping; picked up some Motul 5100, some K&N filter cleaning stuff, and a feeler gauge set.

Well i got home, dropped the oil out then started to remove fairings and bits and pieces. Eventually got down to the rocker cover and got that off not a problem but in doing so pulled the gasket out of the rocker cover (bugger, but ah well). Then couldn't get the damn crank case end open... not to worry; TBone to the rescue!
One impact driver and finally got the bugger off. Finally got TDC on cylinder 1 (i got it just by looking at the lobes and turning the rear wheel... but anyway). Measured up the exhausts, moved on the cylinder 2, exhausts, then for the intakes. WTF? The damn feeler gauge is to fat to fit in there!

Great, so now i've got a bike sitting in my garage with a basic service completed (air filter cleaned, oil changed, chain lubed, brakes cleaned...) but with no damn rocker cover on... and a busted gasket and no gasket sealant.

No riding for me tomorrow i guess; there goes Thompson Dam.
Anyway, as compensation for my lack of riding tomorrow.. i'm gonna see if i can finally replace all the globes in the gauges with LED's and do some tricky stuff with them. If i actually do get it done i'll post my results, otherwise assume i got sidetracked (again).

lesson No2 always start maintenance jobs Sunday night so that any " un-needed parts" can be obtained before the next ride...

I did my valves recently and while all the exhaust were in spec, I had one inlet valve that I could not get my smallest feeler (.0015" or .04mm) under. I think I put in about a 158 - had 175 or about 0.17 less (~.007")

Good Luck KOMA

Hehe, well i got it all back together again after admitting defeat and wasting my time attempting to do the valve clearance check with fat gauges. I'll be sure to borrow some of the slim feeler gauges for next time... and next time i'll be getting a new gasket! Old one was impossible to get back on - took almost 2 hours of messing around.

That said, the beast is once again purring like a kitten and coming on strong from about 2k rpm now; whereas before it was hesitating alot below 3.5k. I'll definitely do those LED mods some time soon... yeah, i couldnt be bothered last night. I replaced all the bulbs with fresh ones so now i've got even illumination. I'll plan out the entire thing then go shopping at Jaycar to stock up on LED's and resistors.

Oh, and how did that dodgey valve end up dave? Get the proper clearance eventually?

Yes it came up within specs as did all the inlets first go. I had one on .006" and one on .004" and all the rest were less. Got them all within .005" and.008". But it would not start for love or money ???? I had lifted all the carbs off and drained them previously. I ended giving each carb a squirt of electrical contact cleaner and it fired into life. You would not think it would be flammable but it's the best "EZstart" I've seen.
