Well, whilst changing the spark plugs on my fizzer today, one of them decided they'd snap off inside my head. question: how the hell am I supposed to get half a spark plug out of myhead? it's snapped off below the silver part where the socket connects to, and i have no fkn idea how to get it out, and am nearly about to say fk it to the fzr and just sell it. /frustrated, angry and cranky
I know your predicament. I had one that was stuck and I was facing the same thing. Luckily it came out after several tries. Sorry to say that your head will have to come off. But its not a hard job, just a major inconvenience. I would reckon that somehow or other the plug remnants will need to screwed through to the combustion chamber side. The reason they break is that the plugs have about 25mm of thread but the head only has ~8mm of thread and the exposed thread of the plug gets a build up of carbon on it. The lesson here is to pull the plugs out every time you do a service. I also use LOCTITE - NICKEL ANTI-SIEZE , it's good to over 1000deg C. There is a HOW TO on this site for head gasket change - http://www.fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?t=1456
If it snapped doing it up and not undoing it then you may have some luck with a flathead screwdriver. The end of the plug has a bit of a hook on it and you can use it with the screw driver to get it out if you are lucky.
it's all good, used one of those easy out thingies this morning, wonderful invention thems ams. BTW, 2 spark plugs did it, so i'm not gonna try the other side. the old plugs went in so easily. any idea what could possibly be causing spark plugs to snap, even thought they're brand new, i think i should just take it into the yamaha shop and get the guys there to do it any idea how much they'd charge for a set of spark plug installation?thanks for the suggestions guys
If they are brand new ones that are snapping it means you are doing them up too tight! They have a crush washer on them so you only need to do it up so as to collapse the washer, any more can snap the plug or strip the thread in the head. It could have been allot worse if that had happened.
Lube the plug thread with a little anti-sieze then screw it in by hand. Using a socket seat it and turn it till it just feels snug and give it a 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Any more and they will either snap or strip the thread. The anti-sieze helps it to go in smoothly and come out smoothly next time you check them. Kind of a untold secret when working on anything alloy and should be used on every fastener.
