Hey guys, just a quick update on where its at...

Im just looking through pics of the carburetors to make sure I get them right so no pics yet... bearing in mind the rumors of using the model in tutorials, Im thinking these could be a good thing to try and see how tight the program Im using can get (or how loose and useless...)

The float-checking tutorial on this site is awesome, some really close photos and the carb angles have helped heaps!

Im thinking they should come out pretty sharp (thanks to the photo's on this site), I'll post pics soon as they're ready!

Ok here is the evidence of an evening of photo studying..

Hey Timbus, the carburetors you used for the float-checking tutorial, they were of a 3ln right? 3ln's have black vacuum chamber, and 2kr's have ones like I've modelled yeah?

Looks awesome m8!

Are you planning to use some NURBS on it?

Hey Squog,

Yeah NURBS would be awesome but the program Im using isnt geared that way unfortunately.. Im thinking of using them in VIZ to make the fairings and seeing how well they import into this program...

Ive just arranged the carburettors, how do we like deese apples?

I still need to go through them and make sure things like text arent mirrored, but thats for another night...

Bugger me that's awesome!

Already I can see that there is a whole lot more detail in this model than the kwaka!

I used to do a bit of 3DS max, but I never stuck with it long enough to be any good at it!

BUT... If you want some textures done, I'm your man!

My photoshop program is awaiting instructions

Yup they're 3LN carbs.

DO NOT USE NURBS! They are dead. Sorry to say it to people out there who think NURBS are 'the in thing' but they aren't. They're old, tired, and lack definition. Their real problem is that polygons are faster (improved formulas for polygons every time a 3d program arises), plus way more versatile then nurbs.

My favourite modelling program is Lightwave. Max is good too but I hate the interface. Maya is too hard for me.

What program are you using?

I use blender, but you didn't ask me. But I'm telling you anyway. It's fee, and I'm not serious enough to pay for anything. Maya's damn expensive too!

Lol I just realised, because you mirrored the carbs, you have 2 with reverse lettering. hehe.

LOL, and the cylinder #3 drain is subsequently pointing in the wrong direction.

haha, yeah the text and float drain holes (and screws) on carbs 1, 3 and 4 are some of the things that need fixing on another night (consequences of mirroring rather than replicating)... but if these are the only problems you fellas are finding then Im doing alot better than I thought!

Im using an architectural program called Revit (by Autodesk) and its awesome for what its meant to do... unfortunately not bikes

So you guys use Blender? and Lightwave? and Max?

I'd say max is the pick of them (even though it may be the most expensive). Alot of the bigger comapanies love it, its quickly becoming the industry standard - but all of these programs are amazing, Im sure they can achieve the same level of goodstuff as long as you know how to use them... if you really want to get into this kind of stuff though, get good with common programs and join CG companies (like good ole Weta in Wellington, and Blizard are hiring too - both companies use mainly 3DMax I think), cause working in such comunities are what make you masters...

Where abouts do you 3D guys hang out online? What kind of stuff have you modelled? Share and share alike fellas...

So nurbs are that bad huh? Guess its good that this program doesnt support them then, cause Id be right in... Yeah I quickly dropped these carbs on the bike and the change in detail looks a little funny, they have much more detail than the engine block...

all goood fun though...

I also use bryce 3d and terragen for awesome yet insanely fast and easy backdrops.

Before you say that 3ds MAX is an industry standard, let me say that Lightwave was used for games such as:

Burnout 3
Quake IV
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II
Doom III
Full Spectrum Warrior
Unreal Tournament 2003
Halo
Serious Sam
Age of Mythology
Mechwarrior 4: Black Knight
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
Everquest: The Ruins of Kunark
Diablo
Fallout 2

And for movies like:

The Matrix Revolutions
X2: X-Men United
Blade Trinity
Monsters, Inc.
Toy Story 2
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Ugh.. and Jimmy Neutron =(

All of which have (or had for its time) stunning graphics.

MAX is somewhat preferred for games because of the way it combines texturing/modelling/animation all in one. But it's far from an industry standard.

haha either way, I use an Autodesk product and they show us stuff from their point of view... so I guess I dont really have much idea of industry standards.

But I never said that Max 'was', I said it 'was becoming' an industry standard and to prove my point, were any of the movies and games you mentioned made in the last two (or three) years? Or perhaps I need to play more games...

(edit) aha, quake four came out last year I think, perhaps I dont know as much as I thought. Or perhaps I think too much. Or perhaps both.

But anyway show us some of your goodstuff fellas, cause Im trying to scope someone out who is tuffnuts enough to try doing the fairings, both 3ln and 2kr...

WISH I could help you out, hisdirt... but what little 3D skills I had, are long forgotten! I used to know a bit of Lightwave, 3DS MAX, Blender ... but I haven't used either one of those programs in about... 5+ years!

Ok, I will take some photos of my 2KR's fairings while they're detached. I'm fixing my throttle cable and had pulled out the left one instead of the right. Any required angle you would like me to take?

Actually, if I'm able to request..

I'd like a photo of both faces.. That is, the painted side, and the non painted side. As flat-on as possible (perhaps I can double it as a texture..)
A perspective photo (Just a normal photo of it on an angle).
And a photo of it edgewise.. That is, so I can see it sideways for a better 3d perspective..

That would be fantastic.

Hey TiMBuS, how are those fairings coming along?

Ive been away, just got back and caught up... and if Im able to request...

Could you make everything double size? A consequence of one of the workarounds in my program.
Also, keeping a high poly count would be a good idea, I doubt that any auto-shading features will translate between programs...

Anyway, time to start making the airbox...
