Ive been trying to start the fzr today witout success.Hav'nt bin riding it for a few days. Will leaving the fuel tap on contribute to this?
The fuel pump is there and working, would bump starting clear it quicker than just turning the engine over?
Took out two of the plugs and they are a little wet, think ill take out all four, wire brush and dry then retry, they look fairly fresh.
I drained the two outside carbs but cant drain the two inner carbs as the drain screws are locked tight and having put a fair bit of pressure on them they wont budge, dont want to strip the heads off the drain screws either. Not a great day all in all!

if my bike refuses to turn over and fire up, it works 100% every time if i clutch start it. i found my bike floods a lot, and whilst you're at a stop, hold the throttle flat out with the bike in nuetral, this keeps my bike at enough revs to run.

once i turn off the fuel, it's fine after about 10 seconds and rev's freely, turn on fuel at will and ride away! :p

Yea, mine floods someitmes. I leave the feul tap off, then when I turn it on it floods - I can see this because there is a small excess valve or something. But clutch starting it is fine and just hold it at high revs for a while till it al clears up. ALso starting it with the feul tap off, so it cant flood, then once its going turn it back on. That seams to work for me.

Thanks for the advice guys, bump started the bike and she started first time <!-- s:cool: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt="" title="Cool" /><!-- s:cool: --> .I will take your advice and leave fuel tap off when not using the bike and start it with the fuel tap off, then switch over.Easy flooding must be a thing with the fzr 250,well i know now at least.
Took out the plugs and gave them a cleaning for good measure and checked the gaps,re-set them to .7mm also. All's cool now.

I wonder if this is a fuel-pump only thing?

Mine starts pretty well ('90 3LN-1) in the mornings etc... I 'joggle' the throttle at the low-end a bit and have the starter pressed for a few seconds longer than normal, and then when I hear her catch, I let it go.

I keep her at ~4k for ~10secs, and then let off the throttle and get my gear on while she gets warmed up.

Starting her after she's been going for a while is a whole nother story!

I find the whole process takes a little bit longer to get through, I have to hold down the starter and 'joggle' the throttle a lot to get her to do. But once she does go, she's fine!

Mine's fine once its warmed up for the day. It tends to happen if I haven't started it for a week or so, but after I've had it going it's no problems for the rest of the day.

Thats funny, my 1989 2kr starts as fast as I can push the button. No choke, just turn it on, tap the start button and its alive!

Ok, perhaps not that helpfull but I wanted to contribute...

I found the problem guys! It also contributed to the failing of my WOF. First of all a piece of advice to any noobs.

    BUY A BIKE COVER!!!

Its only about $40 and it will stop the sunlight from putting cracks in oyur tires, which will cost much more than the $40. Well it'll help I guarantee it.

Anyway the real problem was a sticky needle. He said something about needle and clay?? The needle is sticking so it's not sitting right which lets the fuel out. So maybe that's all of your problems too. Try tapping/hitting the thingy where thats held. I'm not sure where it is on the fizzer. I might try and take a lok myself, and if I can fix it I'll post some pics to help you guys out. If you feul taps ON and its leaking, then you tap the thingymajiggy it stops, then thats the problem. Haven't been much help aye.

If your talking about the needle in the carbs then there is some big difs cos the fzr has 4 carbs unless you are fuling up only on one pot

    Clean the carbs

After read many posts on this site, the most common piece of advice is to clean the carbs, my Fizzer had all the problems a major service couldn't fix; hard starting, sick idler, very poor fuel economy and poor bottem end performance. I stripped the carbies down and cleaned them with two cans of carby cleaner. Once they were back on the bike ran like a dream, fixed all the areas I just discussed and is a dream to ride. The bike is so responsive down low as well as right through the rev range. My advice to those who are having similar problems, go out and get yourself a couple of cans of carby cleaner and sit dow to do it. Dont break the carby bank but be sure to use a spray nozzle to get into all the nooks and crannies.

Make sure you number the carbs and ensure all the right bits go back into the right places and you will notice the difference for sure.
