Is this my sump plug? and why cant I get it off?

    Hey guys, trying to do an oil change for the first time on my bike. I am assuming this is my sump plug (see pic) but for some reason it wont come out.

    It has a thread in the middle in which a screw came out of what was that for?

    Is the sump plug a left hand thread?

    Well done hainerob.
    Yeah, as you found out that's the sump plug indeed... and they do tend to get a bit tight if the previous mechanic was a big vigorous tightening it up. However it's far better to be tight (within reasonable spec) than loose.

    Also, whilst on this topic... a friendly suggestion to spend the $1.25 and go buy a replacement washer when doing oil changes. Do NOT continually re-use the old washer... else bad things happen... mmmkay? By all means, once or twice (even though Yamaha says replace every time)... but if it looks like a flat solid washer, it's time to replace it!

    my friend on hes cbr250. he tightened it up too much and distroyed the threading~ was hes first time.

    oh what washers to use? i dont think mine has a washer~
    is it the metal one? or a paper ish one?

    Its a compression washer... you know the sort like the ones on spark plugs. You tighten it up the first time and it compresses it to apply even pressure across the contact patch; ideally to stop the bolt from undoing itself. <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: -->

    I think they are called crush washers. The screw in the middle of the sump bolt it so you can undo it quickly. Loosen it with the socket and then a screw driver is used to remove the bolt so you don’t get oil all over yourself and your tools. I just use a pair of rubber gloves.

    The art of 'getting the sump plug out but not getting oil all over ones hand' is an elusive one, but after getting much practice with a mate who overfilled his car with oil, then ran it only to blow a head gasket... well i'm kinda good at it now.

    You learn how to make the oil dribble out the bottom of the sump plug, then you just kinda unscrew it but hold it there, and then pull the plug out by rotating it upwards... whilst all the oil goes into the pan.     yup. for example, after successfully replacing the friction plates in my clutch for my dt230, I was putting the clutch case back on, and managed to snap the oil drainage bolt off in the case.

    Damn it.

    Or like not doing up the drainage screws on the carbs before putting them back on the bike, connecting everything up and running the bike.......
