I have been pretty heavilly into bikes and cars for most of my life, but never really did anything about it... but now that I am 25 I want to do something along the lines of design, or even just be a mechanic, do u guys think that it is too late for me to go along that sort of road in australia??
i dont htink youre too old... but be prepared to start at the bottom again i guess... it may take a few years for you to really get where you want simon
Heya, no way are you too old. Im in the Architecture industry, and even though I started late the fact that Im so interested in it has caught me up very quickly. Its certainly better to be at the bottom doing something you want, than high up the wrong ladder. Figure out if it really is something you're wanting to be in for the long haul - then get into it and really apply yourself. Of course there are other things to consider (are you supporting a family, budgeting and all that), but if you arent tied down then there will be no time like now to branch into that kind of thing. To apply a mechanical analogy, think of it as starting the race 10 seconds behind but knowing you have one of the fastest bikes on the track... One thing to be aware of though, its very unlikely you'll get a chance at the the design side of things for a few years to come. Be prepared to need to pursure that in your own time. Interest in mechanical principals and their applications will mean you can go alot further than just a being a mechanic - but you'll probably have a few years of slogging to get through beforehand.
It’s never too late but you are going to have to want it bad. I don’t know about the new workplace reforms but in the past employers where very reluctant to give a job (especially an apprenticeship) to anyone who just walks in off the street. They need to know you are committed, in the long term. Being 25 the pay cut you are going to face means you have to seriously ask yourself the same question. Allot of people start out by doing unpaid work experience. If they won’t let you touch a bike sweep the floor, getting your foot in the door is often the hardest part. Go to track days and see who you can get talking to in the pit area and volunteer your services. Have a read of what old Dan has to say. The part about mechanics as a hobby vs. a job is spot on in my view. Good luck.
25??? your still young mate. People change there career when they are near 50 years young. I'm 22 and I still have no idea what I want to do. Ive worked at a engineering firm, as a alloy joiner, petrol pumper, in a produce dept and now doing communication and electronics..and yet I still want to learn more. Get into it mate, never say never! It if doesnt work out least you can say you tried. There are more talkers then doers....be the doer.
