    Today I went to start my Fzr 250, it made the usual starting noises and then heard a sharp crack like metal hitting metal in the engine?? After that there was no sound of the starter motor. I had just finished doing a fork seal and replacing a handle bar. Maybe I put the throttle cables on the wrong way round, other than that there is no explanation..wtf. The previous day it was running fine. Over the past 3 weeks have replaced plugs, oil, oil filter and rocker cover gasket. Should I try push starting the thing or will I only cause damge??

    try crank the engine over by hand and see if there is anything jammed up. If it turns ok, then take a look at the starter (teeth on the gears etc).

    After leaving it to sit for an hour or two I came back to it and turned it over with a little throttle, started in a tic no problem at all. Does anyone have an explanation for this. The loud metallic crack it made earlier definitely didnt sound good. Ah well its fine now..i hope

    Hydrolocked cylinder. Been there, done that.

    Turn your fuel switch off every time you park it, or (better solution) get an electronic fuel switch that shuts off when the motor does.

    Very handy <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

    In automotive terminology, a hydrolock is the immobilization of an engine's pistons by a liquid (usually water, hence the prefix "hydro-"). Hydrolocking occurs when liquid fills a cylinder on the intake stroke and, due to the incompressibility of a liquid, makes the compression stroke impossible. This, in turn, prevents the entire engine from turning, and can cause significant engine damage if one attempts to forcibly turn over or start the engine.

    Just for the curious.

    Learn something new every day.

    So I guess safety first when working with machinery, as said before "cut off the fuel first".

    possiblr starter clutch issue. they tend to make that kinda noise, it will likely start to happen more and more often it is, finding a replacement part may be a bit o f a ***** as not many wreckers will strip a good motor to sell it seperately...

    mine has been doing it since i got it. i find that rolling it back in gear can help it engage.
