Had a distinct change in engine tone on the way in to work today (7:00 am SA time) So seems like my exhaust is having some trouble! Any commonly known faulty connections etc that I should check out first? Bike was also running rich (before the exhaust incident), but seems to be super rich now, could that be as a result of lack of back pressure, or in some other way related?

    EXUP valve strikes again.

Take off the little EXUP cover and with the bike running see if the valve can move. When it returns to idle there should be 2 prongs that return to just over a little hole approximately facing directly forwards on the bike (ie. towards the front wheel).

My initial guess is that one of your EXUP cables has snapped.
Have you lost all power down low?
Have you lost all power up top?

These should help, but bear in mind that the diagrams are for a 1000 I beleive.

    Shot - more questions

So what the easiest way to remove the fuel tank, at the moment, I siphon the tank(not much fun), remove the fuel pipes at the bottem of the tank, then take it off. Puttin it back is quite a mission tho, cause its super fiddley to get the fuel pipes back on to the connectors at the bottem of the tank. Is there a better way?

Easiest way to do it (if i remember) is to turn off the fuel tap, then unscrew it from it's mounting plate, disconnect the fuel outlet hose running to the pump, then remove the tank and fuel tap as a whole. Don't bother draining the tank, but it is slightly easier to do without a full tank of petrol.

Those diagrams for the FZR1000 are pretty accurate except that the EXUP servo isn't located under the tank... it's located on the left hand side underneath the rear duck tail panel. Actually... why did i just advise you how to take the tank off!? FYI i guess.

If it's lost all power down low then it'll be the bottom cable that has snapped as that's the return cable. Before you go messing with it though just take off the EXUP cover (chrome plate) and check to see how the EXUP valve is positioned (4th picture down) and if indeed the cable is broken or not. Getting replacement cables through Yamaha can be expensive... so either get a replacement one from a wrecker or go to a local bicycle shop and find a bicycle brake line with the same characteristics as your EXUP wire. A bit of tricky work getting it the right length and getting it all back in there and you'll be good to go!

I had the exact same thing happen to me about 2 months ago on the FZR1000 and it really does sound like a beast with the valve open. I realised something was up when i rolled up next to an old beaten up car and it's windows and door handles started rattling. <!-- s:-? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_Eyecrazy.gif" alt=":-?" title="Eye Crazy" /><!-- s:-? -->
