Ok, there's benefits to both... but you have to realistically assess the situation. Rebuild + You get to work on your own engine which is a rewarding experience! + You know exactly how your engine is performing and all work is done properly as you did it (in theory) + A full rebuild should ensure plenty of life from the engine - It's gonna be very time consuming if you do it properly, and given we're coming up towards summer rapidly do you want to be off the road? - Some parts are nigh on impossible to get! - The cost of a total rebuild may easily reach over $500. Replace + Quick and easy to swap and engine over especially if its the same model, otherwise a bit of messing around with mounting and conversion. + Should'nt cost you more than ~$600-800 for the motor & carbs. - You get a new engine and drop it in... where'd the engine come from, whats wrong with it, has it been abused? You just don't know. - Without being able to hear an engine running, i'd never sink large amounts of money into it. If it comes with a warraty of sorts it makes it a bit better. When i came down to it, i voted for a replace as your more likely to be able to quickly and easily swap the engine over than you are to do a full tear down and rebuild.
Think closer to $800+ I didn't rebuild mine persay, but freshened it up. Not including the 6-speed, I spent well over $500.
Awee... and there was me thinking of picking up a YZF750 6-speed just for the fun of it. Nah, i think i'll save my pennies for the upgrade machine (although it'll still be an EXUP'd, Deltaboxed, Yamaha...).
I took the motor out and took it to a friend who did it for me for a deal. Of course I had to buy all the barts, he just did the work (and the some more to the cams and valves). I'm quite happy with the pennies that I spent. I can go another 2-3 years before I'll need to upgrade. Not saying that I'll wait that long.......
thanks guys for your input i think the 100% result on the poll is what really got me... so this is where i'm at, I have stumbled across a 3ln3 with 21ks that had its frame bent so they threw away the frame the tank and all the fairings but one everything else is there and i mean everything , this i got for $700.. I was sold when he showed me the remaining fairing. It was the front mud guard which by total coincedence is the only fairing i was yet to replace after the rivets came lose and the tyre wore a hole through on a day trip up tamborine and out through the hinterland. the bloody thing was even the same colour as aussie so thats where i'm at tips on an easier engine swap are welcomed
That bike looks excellent. My engine shat itself too and I have recently found out what happened. (look for my decision time post) With perfect hindsight, I should of let the mechanic do his job. I was rather sketchy at the time (paranoid etc - don't ask)
