Brief history : When I bought the bike last year the shop said there had been a problem with the fuel tap but they replaced it before the sale. Turns out that it wouldn't run in the ON position , only reserve. The shop said they would sort it under warranty but never did despite numerous calls and visits. Took it to another mechanic who charged me to 'recondition' the tap but it was still the same afterwards.
Just disassembled the fuel tap today and it seems that the markings on the cover don't correspond with the actual settings of the tap
I'm thinking that the cover is actually from another tap and that's all that was wrong with it all along. Frickin' stealerships
Can other owners tell me what positions are ON, reserve and OFF on their taps. On my cover the ON position is marked at 6 o'clock, OFF at 9 o'clock and RES at 12 o'clock but looking inside the tap it seems that the correct positions are:
OFF at 9 o'clock, ON at 12 o'clock and RES at 3 o'clock.
Must post a pic to see if mine is the same as on other 3LN-1 bikes.
Cheers- any help appreciated

Careful...

One of the prior owners of my little beasty had swapped over the res & main tubes cause either the fuel tap or pipe is blocked for the main one...what a lazy so & so...why not just fix the problem?

easily fixed your self.

drain your tank and remove it, remove the pickup from the bottom of the tank and clean it.
blowing through the fuel tap in different posistions should help you figure out which connection is correct. put it together the right way.

I had the same thing happen to mine when i bought it. if you take the tap apart then make sure you have an oring kit handy. coz its gunna leak wen it goes back together otherwise..... not that mine did.......

Little off topic here but anyway
I was riding home from uni one day and had to turn the tap to reserve, no sweat move my leg outta the way reach down with my left hand and turn.
Sometimes it gets a little stuck and it did this time and I had to battle with slowing down and speeding up traffic, so I went to make sure it was turned all the way and couldn't find the tap?!!
As I was going along i was looking down thinking wtf? eventually got to a red light stopped, peered down and it was gone!
So now it's stuck mostly to reserve until I bother going to get one from the wreckers

Re:

Yeh, my outtake and reserve lines had been switched, so turning the tap to On just connected that to the Reserve line. Duh.
I disconnected the On line and found it to be blocked, so I guess someone took the easy way out...

Anyone know what is meant by "pickup"?
Now that I've cleaned the On line, I've found that both the On and Reserve switch positions will drain my tank completely. Looking inside I see that there are 2 drainage holes in the bottom of the tank, one just a cm or 2 in front of the other. I'm guessing there's supposed to be something protruding into the tank from those holes, a couple of pipes of different length I guess?

The fitting that screws to the bottom of your tank, with the ON and RES hoses leading to your petcock, should have a plastic piece with two 'fingers' that protrude into the tank. These fingers are filter screens; the ON finger is only screen on the top half, so can only draw fuel down to about an inch or so off the bottom of the tank. The RES finger is screen all the way to the bottom, allowing it to drain the remaining fuel in the tank.

If you don't have this screen assembly, your fitting is drawing from the very bottom of the tank whether on RES or ON; running dry while set to ON means - you're DRY!
