Hey guys been a while since i've been online but i'm back with a quick question. Ive got a rather nasty oil leak which leaves atleast for or five drops every time i get off my bike. After i clean the engine it appears to get uniformly covered in oil on the lower half. Is the lower half of the sump detachable and does it have a gasket as this split seems to be where it is coming from.

The sump most definitely does have a gasket but i dont think thats where the leak is coming from as it would leak more consistantly than just a few drops after you run it. Check around the rocker cover gasket, and chances are you'll find a small crack in the rubber or a little pool of oil around your spark plugs, above the headers, or around where the cam chain tensioner is.

It's extremely rare for a bike to leak oil from the sump gasket unless the sump has taken a very big hit (crashed).

Yep, the bit where the valves and cams are located. There's a thing i tend to call the rocker cover; also known as cam cover, head cover, top end cover, or as Tim put it the "Top-o-the-motor cover."

Between the aforementioned cover and the rest of the motor below it there will be a rubber gasket; that's the one i reckon has sprung your mystery leak.

K i was having a look around and noticed something near the gear box. Basically where it shows the gears ie . 1N23456 on the box, behind that on the enging is a hole which is threaded looking like there is a screw or something missing. there was also a nice drop of oil falling from it. There was alo this very small cable loose, any ideas?

A very small cable in that area i'd say might be the side stand switch.
As for the drop of oil in that area, given it's quite close to where your chain runs are you sure it's not chain lube? What sort of consistency was the oil? Did it look like it had come out of the engine?

As for the small hole with thread in it, can't really see what your referring to in the photo. Any chance of another photo or two to help?

OK its hard for me to get a photo which accurately shows it, try this one. If u look at the gear box directly above the exterior filter if u have one, it says 65432n1. At the lower end (where it says 1) it kind of extends out in a tiny curve. Directly behind that curve is the screw hole with oil quite clearly leaking out and spreading along the sump line. Its right next to where the radiator thingy is bolted on, maybe 1cm to the right. Here is a rough photo to give u an idea. Im sure something is meant to be there, just not sure what.

I wouldnt worry about the cable, i assume its an earth of some kind, i'm more worried about this leak, u can see in the photo the oil running out. Does anyoone have a 3ln in the five dock area that i could come check out and compare to, i'd like to get all my cable and pipes and what-not in order.

ok i was wrong, the leak wasn't from there at all. That loose wire was one of the oil sensor wires. Now the part it connects to is a white plastic piece about 3cm by 3cm with about 3 screws ocming out of it, one large and 2 small (for connecting those oil sensor cables). NOw the eak i think may be coming from behind that. It looks like it should have a cover over the whole lot, an maybe a gasket. Can someone let me know what they think please. Cheers ppl.

It is on page 70 of the parts book. I am not exactly sure what it is but the wiring is coupled with the oil sensor. It does have a gasket that looks like a large oring. The part number is 93210-29196. Hope you get it fixed without too much hassle.

Ok cool i found it, but looking at the diagram, what is that unit that the second (lower) wire gets connected to, thats the one which is lose so im assuming thats waht has come off from the engine.

I am fairly sure that number 7 is the oil sensor. I'm not so certain about number 1.

I'm not looking at a diagram (re: lazy), and taking a guess that your talking about underneath the sprocket cover.....

The wire that you may be speaking of could be the neutral light.
