i use semi synthetic, motul i believe it is or is it belray ? (would need to chek on the name). i buy it at my local yami dealer, costs about $40 for 4L.

there seems to be great debate that you can use car oil as long as it does not have any engine modifiers in it. i just like to use something that is designed for a bike and tend not to care about the argument or savings pitch. i do the service very 4000km. i change filter on every oil change too, its only $15 extra

I've been through a few oil brands in my servicing time and have grown to like the Motul 5100 semisynth aswell. It seems to do it's job quite well.
I'd also highly recommend changing oil filters at every oil change as it really isnt much more money.

The only other oil i've had resounding positive results from was oddly enough a car oil; Penrite HPR10. Contatins no friction modifiers and it's cheap! $28/5L. In my mind it's ok to use the cheaper oil as long as you have a strict servicing schedule. For me, it's an oil change every 3600-4000km's without fail.

Oils to stay away from in my experience are any of those Shell semi-synth ones designed for bikes. Every time i've used that stuff the bike and gearbox felt horrible. Have had a bit more success with Shell Full-Synth but given the price of that stuff i'd rather just stick with the Motul.

Actually penrite is considered a very good oil, designed to last 10 000 in 'normal' operation.

Sometimes the proven cheaper oils are as good as the most expensive- Mobil 1 for example- how many Holden Gen III's spun bearings, have lifter problems, and have extreme consumption issues- while on 'the best synthetic oil' as specified by Holden!

Its more to the point what works well for your individual machine
