Hi...I have searched around for info on this one but with no joy yet.

Road the bike home the other night with no problems. Left it two days, started the bike, into first gear okay and then down the driveway like normal. Then the engine revved like it had slipped out of gear - so okay clutch in and back into first me thinks.

Clutch out and "nothing" engine revs but nothing. Clutch in a into ANY gear at all and still nothing! I can even change gear whilst the engine is running without using the clutch! I hear a slight clunking noise from below but nothing else (noise goes away when the bike is in netural)

Checked oil and thats fine and clutch plates are spinning around when engine running.

Does anyone have ANY clue as to where to begin with this one???

    Cheers

Still have a drive chain? hmmm...

Possibly a broken spring on the shiftshaft. It is located behind the clutch basket (has to be removed along w/oil pump).

Possibly a broken clutch plate/some other foeign matter preventing the clutch re-engaging.

    Possibly severe trans problems.

or sprocket centre stripped on final drive chain

If its not the sprocket, remove the clutch cover and remove the 5 clutch springs and remove all the clutch plates in one go and see what gives. (this is a fairly easy job but I am not sure if the oil needs to be drained from the engine. I think the bottom of cover is higher than oil level when the bike is on the side stand)

Check the inner basket fingers are still there.

I think the inner basket drives the gear shafts, so rotating that whilst in gear should drive the gearbox output shaft if all is good.

The "slight clunking noise" makes me think the gears are being driven.

    Found the problem.

The nut holding the front sprocket on had come off and allowed the sprocket to slide off the spindle and to rotate freely. So now I have a choice:

remove the gearbox and replace the mainshaft if I can find a replacement one or remove the gearbox and rebuild the splines useing weld and a dremel tool. or worst case is to weld the sprocket to the mainshaft (but thats a little extreme even for me)

Anyone have an old gearbox or blown engine that they do not want and that would be suitable for spares?

    Cheers
