Hi guys names Daniel, very nice to meet you all. I just bought myself a Fzr250 1989 tech21, worked well for the frist day and now wont start anymore and i have no idea whats wrong with it. I push started it and it runs fine apart from the temp gauge reading in the red for most of the way through the city which i dont know if thats normal coz once i got goin the temp needle droped pretty quik. But yeah any suggestions of what the problem cld be would help me out heaps consider i dont hav the cash for a mehcanic and i wanna fix it myself.....

its probably in need of a new battery. Temp guage on mine does read hi, (not to red) when im stopping and starting on a hot day through the city. Just make sure your thermo fans are turning on when it gets hot, if not that somethin that must be looked at, dont want to cook it.

Hi Daniel.

To my knowledge, jump starting a bike from a car is fine, as long as the car isnt running.
The problem, I've heard, is just when the car is running, the alternater is charging it (obviously), and in some cases the bikes electrical system cant handle that.

And before you buy a new battery, I havent personally tried it yet but a mate recommended this substace made with cadmium sulphate (usually called INOX battery conditioner, you can get it from supercheap) which dissolves build up on the battery plates and can extend the life of your battery. I think its like $8 or something so alot cheaper alternative (if it works) than getting a new battery.

I charged up the battery all night and droped in back in this morning bike fired up first time i was happy for about 5 mins then got a thinking....If the battery charges up is my altinator not charging it? Or could it just be that the battery is not holding its charge i guess ill have to see how long it lasts charged then buy a new battery and see if it stays charged up for longer....May i just say this site is great i know ill be using it for years to come! As far as the solvent tommy my connections on the battery as well as the leads r perfectly clean...thanx for the suggestion though....

No probs, Dan, but INOX isnt for the connections or leads, its for the actual plates in your battery.
You might have heard of sulfation? it happens when the battery has been over heated, or its over-discharged, or its just getting old. basically, the lead plates harden and that reduces the batteries abilty to generate power. INOX is just a chemical solution you pour into the battery, to reduce sulfation.

Also, im pretty sure (if you cant be bothered riding around waiting to see if your battery goes flat) that one way to tell if your battery is fudged, is you could connect up a multimeter, check its reading. (it should be a little over 12V). if its a good battery, when you go to turn it over, it wont lose too much voltage. (Some one will have to back me up on this one. Ive had a bad battery for a while, so I cant remember). If its fudged, you'll see it drop pretty low.

I actually have an electrical problem on my bike atm where something is constantly running off the battery, even when its shut off, so its doing massive amounts of discharging, which is ruining my battery. disconnecting it is one solution, but its not really the solution im after.
well, im still waiting to find the time to get my bike to run first atm so it'll have to be something to look into in the future.

Because i have modded my thermo fan so i have i switch.
that way i can have it going all the time in traffic. only thing is i have to be careful as it can run independantly of the rest of the electrical system.
when i have the engine switch in the off position the fan will still run and still drain the battery if a have not turned it off.

that thermo switch is a awsome idea i mite do it myself. Sorry tommy i miss understood you with the battery inox. You guys ever seem to lose power through frist once or twice during take of ill be holding the throttle steady put the clutch in and then give it some more but it just holds stead and takes a couple of secs to actually start accelerating. I iwsh the bike did this sorta stuff when i test drove it!!!!!! lol

It is most likely backpressure built up behind the exup whilst idling.
In these here forums you will be able to find a thread regarding the proper tuning of the exup valve. make sure it is spot on tuned, and to avoid the issue of "bogging" at take off, try giving the throttle a little pop while there is no gear engaged. Revving it VERY breifly to ~10,000rpm will let the back pressure out and should let it flow a little better.
to find the thread re: exup tuning, just run it through the internal search engine.

Ignore the red light! It's just there to distract you
It'll go on when you reach 80km/hr regardless of which gear you're in.
It was used by the japs because their max speeds (or most of?) were/are 80km/hr.

.... Isn't it all of them? I'm not sure hehe
Your bulb is probably either missing or blown.
Oh well, one less distraction for you
