Hey guys, just a quick query. When i'm taking off it feels like the final drive is struggling a bit and i can feel a sort of slapping from the tail end of the bike. Anyway the chain is fairly loose off the end of the rear sprocket so what I want to know is, since the wheel is almost all the way back can the chain on a 250 stretch considerably, secondly what else could be causing this slipping/slapping effect. I'm thinking new sprockets and change since theyve gone atleast 25k without a change, or even a regular waxing really, but i suspect it may be something more sinister. Cheers.

Nope, sounds like your chain is toast/FUBAR. Get a new set of Chain and Sprockets and do the maintenance evey week or you'll be buying another set next yer.

If you go with a clip type master-link, you can do it yourself in about an hour (gennerally).

The hardest thing that you do in this project is getting the front sprocket nut off. I recommend having a buddy stop by and help, but it can be done solo.

From the solo stand point... grab a 2x4 and beat the crap out of it... oh, no wait... wrong project.

Grab that 2x4 anyway and stick it through the rear wheel and over the top of the swing arm. Now roll the bike forward a little so the wheel is pushing the 2x4 against the swingarm. Now take the sprocket cover off and now you can loosen the sprocket nut (don't forget about the lock tab).

Before you go any further, don't take the nut off yet, take the 2x4 out and look along the chain and see if you have a clip style master-link. If you do good, move the bike so that that link is in the middle of the rear sprocket. It'll make it easier to remove the clip. If you have no clip, find a dremel/die grinder and start grinding the rivets off one of the links.

Now, if you can get the front sprocket off and the new one back on without having to remove the chain, do so. Take the end of the old chain that is going over the top of the rear sprocket and attach the new chain to it via the new master-link. Pull the old chain out from the front over the new sprocket and you can now tighten the front sprocker as well as possible at this point. Remover the rar wheel and replace the rear sprocket. Put the wheel back on and move the adjusters all the way back in.

This is where everything changes. Clip or Rivet? I'll only use a riveted master-link. If you use the clip, make sure that it is "ON ALL THE WAY" and the the opening of the clip is pointing .... dang I forget.... I want to say the opening is facing the direction of travel.

If it is a rivet type link.... well.... you're going to need to spend some money and get the right tool ot pay someone to do it for you.
