Riders think that wearing shorts, singlet and thongs is what they should wear and those open face helmets

'Cos they want to show off their purty faces.
Worst example of this was a brand spanking new Vespa with L plates on it, with a guy riding and a girl pillion. Both had nothing more than thongs, shorts, singlet, designer sunglasses and MOMO helmets. I actually felt sorry for that girl on the back; she had no idea what she was in for.

I wonder if it's possible to distinguish in the accident statistics if it was a motorcycle or a scooter.

Im with you on this one.
I think a jacket/armour of some kind and a full face helmet should be the bare minimum.

If a person gets fined for driving without a seatbelt , what is the logic behind letting someone ride without the bare minimum of what will stop them getting injured in a collision?
Besides, it might stop the HD riders from wearin their tuff little black helmets. (they would love that)

plus gloves, your hands are the first thing to hit the ground (survival instinst), followed by your head (no choice) then the bike breaks your ankle(s)

maybe scooters are fitted with air bags

my one lay down was arse first followed by back/hands and helmet(on a track and waayyyyyyy to fast for the corner). The collision I was in was the result of a "lady" running a light then leaving me on the pavement. I was able to swerve to the inside and only make contact with the tail end leaving me the better of 2 options (grill ornament is not a good option) and able to bail. If I didn't have gear on, I'd be a red streak on the road.I think if they had a licensing course for them, they'd get to see what happens when car and bike meet, or when ass meets asphalt.

the only time i ever droped my bike was at a stop sign, my jeans got caught on the ankle guard which meant my leg was the only thing that got damaged.
it would have looked pretty funny because i didnt even take m hands off the bars, i dont know how this is relevant but i do recomend dragon jeans i know they are expensive but they are bloody good jeans.

I've had too many accidents not to wear gear :p

I, too, think more gear should be compulsory, and enforced by law.

I'm pretty lucky in that both my major accidents I was wearing full gear - the first time I basically had to replace the whole lot.

I love gear. While it doesn't make me feel immortal, it certainly makes me feel a lot more fricking safe. i can't stand getting on a bike without minimum of helmet, jacket, gloves, draggin jeans, and boots - I get flash backs of sliding down the road, the sound of crunching plastic and scraping metal, and vivid images of of my skin grinding along the bitumen like it's a chees grater. Seriously, i do.

I just can't stand to ride in less, and to be honest that doesn't phase me in the slightest.

If you ride around in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, it's no quantum leap substituting shorts.

Not wearing strong footwear and gloves is something else again.

Hows this for keen though?

I was up at a Central Coast beach and in the local eatery there was this father with two kids around 6-7 carrying these ginormous helmets.

Anyway, turns out the father had ridden his 750 sports down in tshirt, shorts, thongs, and no helmet with the two (yes 2) kids on the back wearing the huge helmets. (no other safety gear)

These helmets looked ready to snap the kids necks had the rider got hamfisted. I have to say that the rider took it very easy tripling his kids back to their joint. Everyone in the area looked in astonishment at this bloke who appeared to love being the centre of attention. Lucky he wasn't made of chocolate or he may of eaten himself.

It was mildy amusing to say the least

If people want to do that **** then I am no one to judge, but if those kids ended up wearing their assholes as an eyepatch, well thats another thing altogether.

I wear Joe Rocket alter ego pants and jacket, and the Nitrogen glove. I have a shoei lid with a reflective strip from a buddy who is a cop. I can't see riding a bike with just shoes, shorts and a wifebeater, its just asking to be peeled like a potato when you lay er down.

I wear my helmet jacket and gloves at all times when riding as far as pants and boots. I just wear jeans and shoes.....I just dont like the idea of carrying clothes to get changed into like changing my pants when i get to work...ball breaker same as the shoes, i cant wear boots at work....However seeing ppl driving around in singlet and shorts makes even my skin creep.... To afraid that the one time i do will be the time i come off. Better to live with no regrets!!!

Thats why wrinkle guard clothing was invented. I wear shorts and a T under my suit, and pack my work clothes in a courier bag. Thank God I don't wear a suit.

I have seen my fair share of idiots in shorts shirts and thongs...
I didnt know it was possible to ride in thongs...... My draggin jeans, dri rider jacket and gloves saved my skin a few months back after hittin some gravel mid-corner.. I think gear should be compulsory!!!!!
Ive seen a few in full gear with no cloves, whats the point? People like that should be made to make a fist, punch the asphalt and then drag it for 10 meters and then tell me they dont need gloves.

Yep DRAAAAAAAAAAAAGGIN Jeans I owe my skin to from the other week. Breaking hard to miss cars in the city, on a slight lean, hit the tram tracks and down she went. (Embarrasing!!!) These should be the minimum I think and well worth the money. Got a hole right in the middle of the kevlar patch on the knee and the kevlar is still 99%.

The leather jacket and padding as well as the rest (helmet gloves etc) definitely a must also.
