Ok, here's the story.. Was going to go for a ride this evening... it's been about a week since I've last rode it (halfway through I realised the fuel tap was still on, so I turned it off). Went to start it, heard a small *pop*, but the bike started as normal so I didn't give it much thought. Left it for about 5 minutes to warm up so I could get my gear on and stuff. Came back to the bike to see a lot of white smoke blowing out of the exhaust. Jumped on the bike to see if it was temperamental and if I could just ride it off. When I tried shifting to 1st the bike just stalls. Tried again a few times, and still just stalls every time I put it into gear... Sad Any thoughts of what went wrong? Damnit! And I was gonna get it checked out tomorrow night as well! Now I can't get it anywhere! :'(
If its a 3LN and it stalls when you put it in gear make sure your side-stand is up first. If it was up, then make sure the sidestand switch is working properly.
Yeah... sillyness on my side... I was so eager to ride that I jumped on the bike and forgot the side stand... Still a bit worried about the smoke though... It was pouring out! From what I could see, it was white smoke, but it was dark so I couldn't see much.
it normail for alot of white smoke first thing i get it for about the first 10min... untill the temps at half way
Mine blows white smoke in the morning while it's warming up.When i will get down the street and it's all sweet.
If it is cold outside the bike will steam out the exhaust as the condensation in the exhaust system evaporates.
Hmm... that could explain it... It IS starting to get fairly cold (can't remember how cold it was though) It would explain why it wasn't blowing smoke the second time I let it run.
It's a common question about the steam from the exhaust. It comes up regularly on most forums during colder weather.
Update: The bike still runs. Took it for a ride today to leave at the mechanics. What I've noticed is that the smoke starts coming out when the bike starts heating up. If I leave the bike idling long enough the temperature starts to going up, and the fan stays off. The higher the temperature, the more smoke there is. When I'm riding, the temp stays down where it's supposed to be. I'm guessing the air is cool enough to keep the temp down (dunno if the fan is working or not). Broken thermostat or broken fan?
If it was a blown head gasket it would blow the white smoke all the time and you would have serious overheating issues. Easiest way to check if it is the problem tho, check for oil floating under the radiator cap or water/coolant in the oil. Does the fan turn on at all before the temp gauge hits the red line?
but if it was a blown head gaskey wouldnt there be far more serious symtoms than a bit of white smoke and a slight tmp rise? so lets lok at the best case scenario what else could it be?
