hey guys ive been thinking about getting someone to give my engine and carbs a good going over and was wondering if there were any reccommended mechanics in adelaide. I took the bike to Yamaha pitmans on Main north road and they said they wouldnt touch it because it an import. I have been going to Japanese motorcycle dismantlers on churchill road but thought id ask here before committing to anything. Someone north of the city would be good as im at Enfield but just south is fine too i guess.
What a load of bollocks! They don't want to touch it because it's an import... go in an ask them if they'll service a MC21 CBR250RR, because the majority of those are imports! Cleaning carbs is not as scary as you might think. If you can do an oil change, replace and air filter, and remove a fuel tank then your probably ready and capable of cleaning carbs.
It wasnt really the cleaning of the carbs that i was worried about it was more rejetting or whatever. It as it seems to run pretty rich at the moment, i get about 160km just before hitting reserve. The reason they said was because the service manuals were in japanese so they couldnt be bothered, slack but honest i guess. These guys are genuine Yamaha dealers so i dont know if thats a policy they have or not. Anyway so noone has any good suggestions for adelaide? be nice to have an idea where is good
160km before reserve means the bike is in a moderately good state of tune! A bike in a good/great state of tune will get ~170km's before reserve and a little over 200km's before the tank is starting to look a little dry. Rejetting is not something that needs to be done on a regular basis. Once the bike has been tuned or adjusted for the engine condition and any variations for exhaust/intake restrictions, the needles and emulsion tubes should last approximately 50,000km's as long as the carbs are clean. If they are dirty and left that way they'll wear out quicker.
Yeah, 160km sounds pretty good! I know a lot of us push 130-140km before hitting reserve. Sometimes I only get 120...
If your only getting 120km's to a tank whilst doing around town stuff, take your bike into the hills and give it a good hard blat. If you find you get better fuel economy whilst your harder on the throttle it means your needles and emulsion tubes are almost definitely worn out. Reason for this is whilst your commuting you tend to use one part of the needle; where as running through the hills your using the other parts of the needle that won't be so worn.
I used to get 170-200 before reserve, depending on riding style. Mostly 170,
