Hi i have done a few simple but nice changes to my fzr 250 genesis only service things but the bike is running excellently. All except for, now it over heats and this worries me. I think the radiator fan has stopped working could that be the cause any idea how to fix this problem. Thanks Paul
It should be really easy to tell if you fan has stopped working. let the bike get hot and then look at the fan through one of the air outlets on the side of the fairing. If it's spinning, its working. I may be wrong, but arent the "genesis" motors the five valvers? if your not riding the bike and its over heating then thats normal but if your riding it and its still doing it then you have a problem see if your fans working it will only start when the bikes hot if not look to see if you unpluged it while doing your service if it is try topping the coolent up and taking the bike for a slow putt if this doesnt work then you might be looking at a bad thermostat i just got a new one and it cost me $170 fitted
Pull the thermostat out and put in a pot of boiling water It should begin opening at around 80deg C and fully open in boiling water. Easy test <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s --> Let the bike idle and the fan should come on before the temperature gauge gets to the red mark.
I rode the bike home today from work and had the chance to check. It doesn't look like the fan is working is there any way to test whether it is the connection or the fan motor? Thanks paul
The fan should not come on during normal riding unless you are stuck in heavy traffic in town and the weather is hot.. You can test the fan by shorting the two terminals of the temerature switch together while the ignition is on. The switch is located on the thermostat housing.
HI thanks i'll give that ago tomorrow after work. Also how can i tell if my bike is a genesis? I was only going by the stickers all over it when i bought it. Why is a 250 genesis unique? Thanks Paul
Genesis is the name Yamaha gave to their 5 valve engines in '84 or '85 with the first FZ750. If Yamaha used it on the 250 it was just to try and give it the look of its bigger brothers. I know that the 3LN's dont have the Genesis label. Did the 2KR have genesis stickers?

I have had similar problem with my bike. If i am stopped in traffic for more than say 5 min's then the temp soars. And the weather has been freezing? Once a constant speed over 50kph is maintained the temp comes back down very quickly.

I had the same over heating trouble so all I did id hard wire the fan with a switch,so when the bike started to get warm I turned the switch on that turned the fan on only thing is that you have to watch the guage...basically it just bypassin the thermostat,which is ok so I can by pass my bank account !! <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s -->
