Ok, I feel I'm having troubles getting my cam marks aligned correctly after doing the shims. I'll say right now that I have consulted and followed all previous posts in conjunction with the manual along the way.

It all comes down to this... I can get the two cam "match marks" in time with one another (ie, both on their marks at the same time), but I CANNOT GET them EXACTLY on at the same time as the magneto reads TDC. It's only when the T is a little past the 0 that they line up. I've worked the difference out to be 4 degrees on the flywheel, or 2 degrees on the cam shaft (which is 0.2 of a tooth).

I know I'm a perfectionist, but quoting mat41174 from an earlier post on the subject:
Can someone help?

Here are pics of the cam marks when the flywheel is at TDC.

Am I being pedantic? or is this error caused from the wear and tear of parts? OR IS THERE SOMETHING I'M FREAKIN MISSING BECAUSE I'VE THROWN EVERYTHING I CAN AT THIS 3 TIMES NOW AND IT'S THE CLOSEST I CAN GET

CAM TIMING

CHECK THAT THE CAM CHAIN TENSIONER IS WORKING OK,THIS CAN ALTER THE TIMING MARKS.

Had exactly the same problem but I tried more than 3 times. Ended up settling for both of them looking like the second pic. Honestly couldn't do any better, I could get them close but no way to get them on the dot.

Thanks for posting your thoughts guys. Cam tensioner had plenty of meat left on it. I'm pretty sure it's "working".

Since posting this I spoke to a friend of mine over in Vic. He's not the end-all of bike mechanix but he knows quite a bit. His opinion was that it was fairly normal wear n tear between those parts concerned that attributes to this tiny difference.

BTW, how's your bike been running since FZR?? Just thought it was, yunno, kinda relevant in a way to your point ;)

Thanks again.

Just a thought - did you pull out the cam chain guide rail on the front side of the engine. It is a long thing that just pulls out once the chain is loose. It may have worn a little and allow those marks to move off the "exact" position.

Either way i don't think it is a major problem.

Yep, sure did Dave. I think 3rd time round I put it back in after installing the Ex-cam to help keep the chain tension and stop it skipping from under the crank before I did the In-cam. Still not sure whether it was a success or not as I'm still doing the carbs over.

Oh the fun of fizzer fuel systems.
