hey guys... i havent posted here for a while... havent even been riding... but i got my bike back out and its behaving strangely. I was hoping for some help with diagnosing the issues... 1. it will have difficulty starting but when it does, it will only stay on when the choke is on. 2. it only runs on cylinders 2, 3 and 4. 3. There is spark in cylinder 1 4. I have taken the carbies out and have noticed that cylinder 1 is flooding and sometimes leaks if i run the engine as the fuel is not being used 5. when i disconnect the fuel source while the bike is running, cylinder 1 starts to fire as the fuel level goes down now im know its a carbie issue but i know hardly anything about how to diagnose or fix problems with them. im guessing that its either a float height or mixture problem but even after taking the float bowls and carbs apart, i dont really know how to adjust that stuff. also would float heights and mixture screws change their settings by themselves over time without me doing anything to them?? Then of course there are needles settings etc and i wont even try to understand all that stuff right now... any ideas? cheers simon
1. Very common problem with the fzr250, either live with it like some of us or you could correctly fix your carbs and floats. 2. This will most likely to be either your needle is so small its not allowing fuel through or too much and flooding cylinder 1, or possibly an air flow issue with your carbs. Using the search function in the common problems section will result in finding all the information to correct these issues.
thanks for your reply M i have done a search but cant find anything that actually tells you how to adjust float heights... there are tutes on how to check your float heights... as far as i can tell, the float bowls are filling up to around the right levels... a couple might be a little higher than others but overall, they are in the ball park. what i dont understand, is why its only cylinder 1 thats not firing and filling up with fuel... how sensitive is the operation of the bike to little changes in float heights? if one bowl is filling up 5mm more than another, is that a major problem? if so, i can fix that... after i find out how to :-\ thanks all simon
5mm? Oh yeah, that's a ton of fuel! I suspect that you need to take the carbs off, and clean the crap out of all of them. Then, before you put it back together, clean carb #1 again. To adj the float height requires you to bend the little tang/tab that rests against the needle. Which direction depends on fuel level desired. The toot's will get you there, just re-read them and study the pics. You can do it, trust yourself.
ah excellent... thanks FZRDude I have no issue taking the carbs apart and giving it a go... ive already cleaned them pretty thoroughly about 5 times hopping that the next clean will make a difference.... i thought that changing the float heights might involve bending something but i didnt want to attempt it before getting conformation for fear of breaking something... so at least now i have an action plan thanks again simon
hey guys just an update... changing the floats seems to have done the trick... all cylinders are firing now... its still not spot on... but its running much better... also adjusted the idle screw to keep it idling close to nicely... i still think i need to adjust the floats down a little bit more but this is good enough for the moment... it now runs off choke fine thanks for your help cheers simon
hey guys... i have a related question to the above... ive been playing with my floats a little bit more... and they dont actually seem to be connected to the rest of the fuel system... so how do the floats tell the rest of the system when to start/stop adding more fuel to the float bowls? i do realise that when the fuel fills the bowl that the floats rise and push a little button... but that button isnt really connected to anything... cheers simon
