    Hello FZR 250 owners and ofcourse Dave the moderator of this splendid forum.

    First a little info about myself, im 44 years old and live in the Netherlands in the town of Delft, 70 Km from Amsterdam and i have owned around 7 bike's in my life.

    Did a lot of riding and also drove on many racetracks around the Netherlands and Belgium,so i know my way around a racetrack.

    Nowadays im founder and chairman of a Italian car club (Fiat Uno Turbo) and i have seen a nice bike for sale in an advert, the main reason for me to register overhere <!-- s:rofl: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":rofl:" title="Rofl" /><!-- s:rofl: -->

    My first bike was a Honda XL 125 dead slow but it never broke down, my second bike was a RD 350 and it went like a rocket, seized up doing around 90Mph <!-- s:-? --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_Eyecrazy.gif" alt=":-?" title="Eye Crazy" /><!-- s:-? --> and i hanged on for dear life, sold that too.

    Next bike was a RZ500 brand new canadian model 88 <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> , couldn,t drive it normaly on the street and picked up a lot of tickets from the police, so i sold that just after a year really being fet up with it, so i got myself a FZ750, but that got stolen and from the insurance money bought another one, nice bike did around 250Kmph but i wanted to go a bit faster so a FZR1000 also a 88 model pre EXUP was next in line, nice bike but i had to sell it just after 2 years <!-- s:???: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":???:" title="Confused" /><!-- s:???: --> (needed the cash <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> ) so far my bikes i owned, that was about zillion years ago, and have ridden a couple of times but not on a regular basis.

    I did ride the complete RD/RZ lineup from Yamaha, dont think manny people can say the same <!-- s:cool: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_cool.gif" alt=":cool:" title="Cool" /><!-- s:cool: -->

    And now i have the opportunity to buy a FZR 250 88 model Framenumber 2kr175824, bike has not been on the road for about 2 years, and the guy tell's me that the tires are a bit cracked thats all.

    So now the million dollar question, what kinda problems im gonna run into iff im buying the bike?
    It has only done about 19.371 km

    Greetings from the Netherlands

    hhhmmm, I would look at the chain and sprockets and see how much wear it has suffered. Because it has been left not running, you could expect tank corrosion and lots of crap in the fuel line which will muck up your carbi's.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the tip,but the guy told me the chain & sprockets were almost new so thats good news, but if he kept the fueltank full corossion would not be a great worry, i think the bike needs to be sorted out first by a mechanic.
    Tires were also a bit old and a little cracked, what would be the best tires for a FZR?

    THe choice of tyres are very limited for the FZR

    2KR front 100/80 H 17 and rear 120/80 H 17
    3LN front 100/80 H 17 and rear 130/70 H 17

    I had a look thru a few web sites and these sizes are not common so the best match I could find was these <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products/battlax/bt39.html">http://mc.bridgestone.co.jp/en/products ... /bt39.html</a><!-- m -->

    Some other members may recommend something different. I am not fond of Dunlops as I have had a few issues with them, poor wear, cracking and not so great grip.

    Because the bike has not been riden for 2 years im almost sure that the carbs needs sorting out, im not A technical but is that very hard to DIY?

    Best thing would also be to change the engine oil, what is the best oil for a FZR 250 and whats the partnr. of the oilfilter?

    Think im gonna change the brakefluid as well, i know a lot of questions but in this case its better to be safe than sorry <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

    Dave thanks for the tire advise, overhere in The Netherlands the Battlax are around €70.- for the front tire and €103.- for the rear

    OK on the tyres. The price sounds about correct. I have Michelin pilot roads on my bike and the front cost A$170 and the rear A$280 but they dont make them in the small sizes you need for the FZR, otherwise I would have recommended them to you..

    Here is a link to a post on some suitable oils <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?t=661">http://fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?t=661</a><!-- m --> and some filter info
    NOTE: early models have an internal filter under a cover plate on the bottom of the sump, 3LN3 onwards have a spin on filter on the front of the engine block

    Oke Dave thanks man for the advise <!-- s:hbang: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/th_Head_Banger.gif" alt=":hbang:" title="Head Banger" /><!-- s:hbang: --> ill get right on it, see if i can order the items with my local dealer, but im still wondering what kinda oil would suit the FZR best, CASTROL R4 SUPERBIKE 5W-40 seems to be a good oil, anyone good experience with the stuff?

    Greetz Ruud (have a nice weekend, ride fast but do it safe) <!-- s:Biker1: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/th_Biker_1.gif" alt=":Biker1:" title="biker_1" /><!-- s:Biker1: -->

    I was considering that castrol "R4 superbike"oil for my bike but the Durablend "car oil" was almost half the price and came in 5L compared to most bike oils that come in 4L which means I get 2 oil changes from a container.
    The recommended viscosities are 20W-40 or for really cold climates use 10W-30.
    However not all brands have these ratings so if one has a bigger range try to get the closest oil that has the correct last number i.e 15W-40 or 10W-40.

    Perhaps this might be a guide for you in regard to oil qualities
