Out for a ride at the weekend, just the usual hazards, the odd wet corner, bit of mud on the road, bit of gravel on a few corners, etc.

On the way home thought I would call in and see a mate that I had not seen for 6 months or so. Little did I know that some time ago he had his driveway re-sealed with fine blue-metal. I think you can see what is coming here!

The driveway is at the top end of a very steep street, one just continues on from the top of the hill down about 30m of driveway and turns right into a large parking area.

I crest the hill at about 20-30k and head down the drive and apply the brakes. Front locks and bike tips sideways. Let off brake and back locks. Back slides out, shed looms and dave struggles, bike does very low speed hi-side and I end up standing on grass

I never picked the driveway as being a loose surface until I locked it up, it was hard to see, particularly coming over the crest.

Usual damage, gear lever broken, clutch lever broken off at base, front indicator non-existant, oggy knob bit mangled, mirror folded back and scratched, and front fairing has some scratches on the vertical lip.

End result 28 k from home, bike not ridable, could not start because of clutch lever and not able to change gears. Ring home for support team, daughter arrives 1/2 hour later with trailer...

You can see in the photo where front brake locks (arrowed) and I am guessing when the back wheel locked (long skid mark) I think the engine stalled and the compression kept the wheel locked because of the low grip.

I just about have enough parts (busted but usable levers and a clamp-on gearchange pin) to get a bike home in future should something like this happen again. Even a bike falling over while parked can make it unridable, although my hi-speed off when I had the FZR was still ridable, even though I was a bit worse for wear.

that's a bummer mate, nothing you can do except chalk it up to some more experience! i dropped my yzf recently coming in to a loose bluestone gravel car park at work - done it a million times but on this occasion i just caught a bit too much front brake on the slope, and with the front turned - bang - down she went before i could even think twice.
good things those oggy knobs, though, kept the bike pretty clean, only the exhaust and front blinker copped a bit of rash.
that track looks pretty treacherous actually reminds me of some back roads way outside melbourne which often have that loose small grain blue gravel spread across - its hard to pick from the actual sealed bitumen surface and can catch you out big time.
Hope the repairs are going well.

Yeah Spook - temp repairs were done, I was out last weekend again and I got a new clutch lever this week in the mail, as luck would have it there was one for sale on e-bay, unused. So that is on now and I now have a set of short clutch and brake levers in the gear sack, plus an emergency clamp-on gear shift foot-pin. Not that I hope to have to use it, but I have been on rides before when bikes have ended up on their sides in car parks..

Which reminds me - look here..

I laughed too, I liked the standing start SUPERMAN stunt. Normally only see dirt bikers doing that while in the air.

Life would be duller without clowns.

What's the deal with fitting Oggy Knobs? Custom welding required?

Mine bolt on with longer bolts than originals that mount the top of the engine. Generally these are bike specific.
